It's a CR1216.

The lights don't flash on the pre-95's to my knowledge. Is the battery in upside down?

You know I'm currently wondering why that feature was removed from all the '95-'00 models....Instead, I have this homosexual looking blank panel in it's place.

That's probably it. When I got my SC, the switch wasn't turned on.

When I bought my car the remote did not work .I bought a Bulldog KE1702 keyless entry system off eBay for $35.00 and installed right next to the OEM keyless module. Works great. The unit even has the trunk pop and light flash feature if you get the additional relays. Easy to install, I used the 12v constant power supply from the oem unit and the 2 wire for the lock, unlock.
Remotes have dedicated lock/unlock button. If you want the horn chirp featuere get the unit with the alarm and just use the keyless part just like the KE1702.
