Yeah, both of you were right.

The programing instructions should be the same through out all the years. Its the same for most Toyota and Lexus vehicles that don't use a smart key.

I think the remote computer for your car is full. I had the same problem with my SC when the dealership programmed it. There were already 4 programmed keys for my car (when I only had 1), so they had to delete the other keys and reprogram my current key and my new key. A car usually has 3 programmed keys (2 masters and 1 valet).

if its the same as Blkexcoupe mentioned then try this

1. Insert an already programmed master key into the ignition. Do not turn.
2. Press and release the gas pedal 5 times.
3. Press and release the brake pedal 6 times.
4. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Insert the new key you want to program into the ignition.
6. Press and release the gas pedal one time.
7. Wait 1 minute. The security light will be blinking for this one minute. When it stops blinking your key is programmed. To end programming step on brake one time.

NOTE: Look for your security light. This light will guide you during the programming procedure. The security light will go off at Step 1. It will remain off until Step 6. The security light will come on and start to blink after Step 6 until the key is programmed. If the security light comes on after Step 4 STOP the procedure and start over again.

If you perform this procedure too slowly your car will not go into programming mode. If you can not get your car to go into programming mode make sure you are using a master key and not a valet key. If you have a master key then you will probably need to perform this procedure more quickly.

Remote Programming

1. Close and lock all doors. Unlock and open drivers door.
2. Put key into ignition and remove. Do not turn it on.
3. Using the electric lock switch. Lock and unlock 5 times. (Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock)
4. Close and open drivers door.
5. Using the electric lock switch. Lock and unlock 5 times. (Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock)
6. Put key into ignition. Turn to "ON" , turn off and remove.
7. You will see the door locks cycle by themselves.

If the door locks do not cycle (lock and unlock) by themselves then the car isn’t in programming mode and you must start over.

8. On the remote, press and hold the LOCK and the UNLOCK button at the same time for no more than 2 seconds.
9. On the remote, press the LOCK button for no more than 1 second.

AT THIS POINT, the locks should cycle by themselves ONE time. This means the procedure was accepted.

IF the locks cycle twice it has failed.

The most common reason for programming failure is because the car didn’t receive a good signal from the remote. To fix this problem try these tips. 1) Stand outside of the car while you are performing steps 8 and 9. 2) Don’t hold the remote buttons down as long.

As long as the car is still in programming mode you can keep trying steps 8 and 9 until you complete the programming. If you wait too long and the car exits the programming mode then you must start over.

After you get the remote to program then continue on with step 10.

10. Close and open door to end programming procedure.

its actually for a 98.

If the door locks do not cycle (lock and unlock) by themselves then the car isn’t in programming mode and you must start over.

I can't get into programming mode, any ideas or tips?

Maybe I'm following the directions wrong?

This is the one i used and it worked great!! The other methods wouldn't work on my car, mine has the separate remote and it should be the same as your 96.

Sit in the driver's seat and lock all the doors.

Unlock and open the driver's door.

Insert the key into the ignition and remove it (don't turn it...just remove it).

Using the MANUAL lock switch on the driver's door, lock and unlock the door 5 times.

Close the door.

Open the door.

Lock and unlock the driver's door 5 times ( use the MANUAL lock switch again,).

Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the "ON" position.

Remove the key.

The driver's door will now lock and unlock itself one time.

Press and hold the "LOCK" button on the key fob for at least 1 second.

Close the driver's door.

Open the driver's door.

Press and hold the "LOCK" button on the key fob for at least one second.

Close the driver's door.

Press and hold the "LOCK" button on the key fob. The door will lock.

Press and hold the "LOCK" button on the key fob again. The door will unlock.

You should be all set.

I just printed your directions and did them and it worked!
It has to be that I was doing it too slow because the other directions said to wait with 1 second intervals and by the time I was done reading all of their details it was taking too long!

Thanks again I finally have this working thanks to your short sweet directions.

Could you answer one more thing, is there a **** to adjust the volume of the beeping when you lock and unlock like on other lexus cars or does it just stay at that volume? Thanks!

GREAT!! im glad you got it working finally, i dont know of any volume adjustment, are you looking to get louder or quieter??? mine isnt very loud but if you think yours is too loud you can disconnect the little speaker for it which should be on the drivers side near the shock tower. if its not loud enough you could try to relocate it somewhere so its louder like behind the front bumper.

I was going for louder but it's good enough, glad to have a remote for the first time since I bought the car, it was a hassle finding the right part # remote, then buying one in good shape, changing the battery programming etc...guess I saved a ton of money from lexus though

Thanks again man you made my night yesterday and day today

Thanks guys very much for your help, those quick easy directions are the way to go, the ones from Lexus are too much detail for techs. I keep forgetting I have the remote now since Ive never had one with this car.

Jimmy that sounds like its a valet key? Not really sure, maybe the guys above can help you too
