Dont car maufacturers start making cars the year prior on a regular basis? It totally makes sense to me that a '97 year vehicle would have a production date of '96.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the production number chart is referring to model year and not year of manufacture. Considering the SC began production in 1991, and the production number chart has no column for 1991.

You guys are probably right. I threw that question to the Lexus Corporate Customer Service . Let's see what they say.

For me it is even better if the Aug-Dec 1996 are included on the 120 number .

If they are, then those that were really produced from January - December 1997 are a lot less than 120 . Which means , they are even more rare and should even be more valuable IF EVER they will hold their value in the future. Unfortunately, right now our SCs don't mean sh?t to the real car guys who build, restore, modify and preserve cars in pristine condition.

We will see what Lexus Corporate Customer Service comment will be.

Default I've got one

black/black, and with heated seats (because Minnesota). I bought it used in 1999 as a Lexus Certified used car, I'm pretty sure the other guy was the original owner. Just rolled over to 100K miles. I took her to the dealership to get service, and the service manager indicated that a couple of the techs wanted to know if I wanted to sell the car. Nope. :-)

After more research and talking to people who knew about SC / Soarer Production.... the production figures Lexus brought out is based on actual calendar dates.

They actually tracked down even 1991 productions month by month except that they declared that body style to have been produced from 1992-2002.

In short , when they say 1997 production, they refer to Jan - Dec 1997 manufactured cars. Lexus would never have access or be able to keep track of the USA DMV records , that is, they will not know when a car was actually registered in the USA. So their production numbers / info are based on the info on the door tags they put in every car and NOT when it was REGISTERED. I hope that clear things up.

On the chart below , you will see that they really recorded even 1991 production of SC300 and SC400

SC300

SC400

@gerrb: Sure! I just went out to check. The door panel says:
Number on bottom: No. 907
Last four of VIN: 0374
Date of production: 06/97

Has anyone ever asked or figured out why the VIN's end than start over at APR/MAY?
Is that their fiscal year, or a factory change? That really fascinates me. There was a major change at that point. We should find out what it was

This will be a wild guess. Probably to mark the major drive train changes ? Like second part of 1997 , they started using big flanges on differentials, drive shafts, VVTi technology.... but who knows, only they can answer.

Added yours pdclark

ThIs is getting way more academic than it needs to be. If you have an SC that looks like a 97 SC, was originally titled by Lexus with a 1997 manufacturers statement of origin, then you have a 97 SC. Even though Lexus may have only produced 120 manual transmission SC's in 1997, they may well have produced some number of 1997 model year SC's in late 1996. At some point in the production, undoubtably in 1996, they stopped producing 1996 body styles and began producing the newer version with its various subtle differences. Actually you could argue that a 1997 built in late 96 would be more rare than a 97 built in 97 as there would be fewer of them. If it matters I'm sure that someone with Lexus could find out exactly when the production line began turning out 1997's. Model year changes are fairly significant events at production facilities.

^^^ You are right, a 97 look 5 speed manufactured late of 1996, technically is a 1997. No question about that. It's all nomenclature I guess.. does the thread refer to manufacturing date 1997 or all 1997 model 5speed which evidently includes some of 1996 which should be more than 120. The 120 number seems to be based on Jan-Dec 1997 production according to Lexus Production Chart.

For me, it doesn't really matter much at this point I guess until people outside the SC community really value our cars. At this point, no offense meant to anyone who owns an SC since I have 4 of them, they don't seem to mean anything outside the SC community.
