for a little under 2 years I have been tracking the 1997 Lexus SC300 5 speed. The rare bird seems to like to rear it's head about every 3-4 months in locals like Craigslist, Autotrader, Recycler, ebay, and cars(all .coms). <Side note congrats to the lucky bastard who picked up the green one in Laurel, Va for $3500 before I could get the vin#>:

Wasn't there an old thread that had compiled and accounted for over 30 97 5-spds? I remember thinking that I shoulder register as well, but never got around to it. Now that I picked up another one I'm thinking of registering both. Hmm...kinda wondering if I'm the only one with 2 also...

The older list on this thread kept track of which ones were totalled as well. I think that list was more than 1/3 of the120 accounted for. Personally, I think that list should still be kept up to date. Thats how the Supra guys do it with the late models.

I think you are right the vin number makes alot more sense, but now that I think of it they wouldn't just have the number for 5 speeds in 97, the numbers on the vin/door would probably include all 97's even auto. I guess there might not be a way to know unless we had the vins of all 120 of them and then put them in order.. and that sounds like alot of work.

I doubt the 120 1997 SC300 5 speed sold in the USA are serialized. Neither the 7 last digits of the VIN or the number at the bottom of the tag will say that it is one of the 120 SC300 5 speed sold in the USA.
To verify that a car is a 1997 SC300, the VIN ( 7 last digits ) should fall inside the group of cars manufactured in 1997. Like the VIN tag example below... neither the bottom number or VIN has resemblance but it is a 5 speed SC300 manufactured in 1997 and its serial number / month of production can be verified from the table below.
The number at the bottom of the VIN tag is N0. 471 , so that means those numbers do not indicate the 120 sold in the USA. It's VIN 7 last digits are 0040561 and it is manufactured in March 1997. If you check the table , Cars in March of 1997 started at serial number 0040324 and in April they started at 0040996 . So it falls on the March production.
Mine has No. 097 at the bottom of the VIN tag and last 7 digits of the VIN are 0040209 so it has a Feb 1997 production date. It checks out against the table below. the 8th vin digit represents the year.. 1999 being 'Z', '98 'Y', etc.. 2000 starts w/ numerals, it being '0' of course, etc.. oil change trick; for when u need to cross fluid qty quickly...
