Default Official Thread: Where's that damn noise coming from?

After watching the making of a BMW 645 on SPEED Channel (thanks OLT) I came to the conclusion that I am on a mission to find and muffle all my Creeks and Squeaks and panel noises that come with time and aging of our Cars.

Please post ANY known causes of interior noise that you have located and/or muffled and how you did it. These could included Exterior noises that you can hear from inside the car.

I'll start: I need solutions to these noises-
1. Sun roof sliding panel. <--makes a little creaking noise when driving
2. Rear interior panels beside rear seats <--sort of sounds like a really quiet tapping noise
3. Door Panels (near the wood trim towards the back of the door <-- another creaking noise
4. Shifter (automatic cars)... <--this one irritates the crap out of me. I REALLY want to know how to silence this one)
5. Rear Seatbelt (when the windows are down that passenger side rear seatbelt flaps like a bird hitting the seat) <----this one gets on my nerves too!

I want my car to sound as quiet as it did when I first bought it.

Anyone know how to fix these? OR does anyone have any to add?

this is what I did to get rid off all the noise.

After i heard some sort of creek or rattle, I would pull that part of the car out. I ended up with a partially gutted interior, but there was no sound Then I slowly started installing every piece little by little until I didnt hear anything. This way, I knew exactly where the sound was coming from.

had that problem on my 95 SC400....Drove me insane... the thing is, it didn't go away after I replaced the WHOLE driveshaft and bearing with a new one.

I had bought the bearing but then decided to change out the whole thing so I sold the bearing to another member.

3rd brake light squeak- no subwoofer in stock place and the new sub in the trunk rattles it loose.
steering column - needs a good greasing of the gears.

Possible Powersteering pump.... have you checked that?

Or it could possibly be electrical. Might be some bleeding into your speaker?

well replacing the driveshaft was only about $75.00 labor. I chose this because replacing the bearing can sometimes cause damage to the driveshaft during the process. I think the labor for that alone was around $450.00
