Over the last few months the moderator team has noticed a growing issue with the SC forum.... it's losing its sense of community. The SC crew has nearly always been mature, helped each other out and worked through their differences like adults.
However, lately there has been an increase in unprovoked personal attacks, rude comments and a general lack of respect for one another. It's not all from the new members; the OG's are sometimes drawn into it as well.
These activities will not continue. We will regain our sense of community, starting now.
HOW? We're going to accomplish this on in two ways...
Stop the bleeding
1) informing members of this request, asking for their help
2) increased moderator presence and attention in the SC forum
3) use of temporary 24 hour or 1 week ban from the forum as cool off periods after ignoring warnings
4) permanent bans for continued offenses against our community rules
Resuscitate the breathing
1) implementation of an expanded set of forum rules (click here to review them)
2) better communication of use of the search feature to new joiners in their welcome email
3) nomination new moderators to help monitor the SC forum and help members
4) implementation of the SC FAQ forum to help cut down on the repetitive Q&A
WE NEED YOUR HELP
I'd like to ask each and every one to stop telling new members to 'use search' without helping them search by also telling them what keywords to look for and giving them a couple of links to helpful threads.
Give a warm welcome to ALL new members, not just the new female members.
Help others. Yes we're tired of the same questions and the dreaded "how much is this SC worth" daily post. Take turns answering them . Cut & paste the same thoughtful response and links you took time to write up last time.
Thicken your skin, be 'better than that'. Don't respond angrily to a rude post. Rise above it or don't respond.
If you get a temporary 24 hour or one week ban, please take the warning seriously. Don't come back angry and complaining and don't pick up in the same thread doing the same thing. We're using this method to try and provide 'cooling off' time when needed. Warnings sent in private and public just don't seem to be doing enough to discourage some of the recent behaviour here... we will show some folks the door if they can't participate in a mature manner that enhances our community instead of destroying it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for taking the time to read this message. We'll accept feedback on this thread for a short while, then it will be pruned and left as a sticky in this forum for a period of time.

We all got some work to do.

When are you picking new mods? I don't normally post too much, but I'm always searching the forums anyway. If you need someone, PM me. I'd gladly help out.

We've established ideas on future mods, but that doesn't mean we aren't scanning the forum Mods are chosen by admins (not the other way around) on their history with the site and members.
Just so it has been said "I wanna be a mod" won't do anything until we contact YOU. (for future reference only so this doesn't turn into a "make me a mod thread". It's not by request.
Thank you for your offer.

Great work Dave... I am excited about the future of the SC forum, because I know you and everyone who loves this forum will work to keep it the at the top of the heap - always treat each member as we want to be treated
- remember to be helpful, no smart alek comments
- keep the jokes clean
- practice patience
- make "beef" comments offline
- PM people whom you have an issue with and attempt to settle those offline
- feel free to speak your honest opinions, but do it conscientiously
- be friendly, be happy, and enjoy the forum and its members and knowledge!!
Just some suggestions...
Ryan

i feel like im on jerry springer... i have an anger posting problem. i too need to appologize to my fellow members. although most of my negative posts were directed to a certian person who hapens to be a good friend..( i know, its wierd) i have been watching these forums go down hill for the last year or so, and lately, it has gotten pretty bad. im sure part is due to the average age dropping every week, but also to the fact that nothing has been done to adress the negativity... untill now. i honestly have no idea where i would be now if it wasnt for CL. i not only have a lot of people listed on my AIM buddy list that i talk to, but i have about 40 or 50 SC owners phone numbers that i talk to regularly.... this is not just some forum.. it is a community! i know the hardest part for me is holding my own tongue when someone is out of line... im working on that myself. i think things will begin to chage. you mods are taking the right steps... let me know if you would like my assistance in keeping the peace. not that i deserve it persay, but i feel that i owe it to CL for all it has given me. I'M SCOTT, YOU STAY CLASSY CLUB LEXUS!

Good point Ki... I noticed that all of us at one time or another have taken personal issues to the posts rather than the pm..Thats a good lesson for all to keep the posts on topic by not bringing personal problems into a thread "UNLESS" the thread was specifically designed for that purpose

Well I'm a noob here but I tend to go to the supra forums more often because like someone else said it's easier to get info and the people are more friendly. My first impression here was that this forum was too secretive, or maybe the memebers were too close together that they didn't respond to anyone new. I think my first post was deleted or something because I couldn't find it a day after, and no one informed me or anything if I even should use the search. I don't usually post here anymore, I just search for stuff now.

Yah, I'm a newbie too, and I also came from the supraforums, but I didn't realize there was so much sarcasm on here! I know I'm a girl, and I hope that by reading my username you would figure I'm a girl, but somehow I get the sense of "she's a girl, she doesn't know what she's talking bout" attitude from some of the members. It's all gravy, I have thicker skin than most girls and the way I see it, is people who got too much hate to handle in their lives and need to grow up. But i hope everyone reasons up and respects each other here. I am beginning to love this place, hope everyone will love me back the same

i think ryan has said it the best.
dave,
i've been on a personal mission to be more of a MEMBER & contribute by posting replies to tech problems. in the past i would refrain for fear of being flamed if i got on the wrong track. i've been doing this a long, long time & i wanted to pass on some theory's & info. as you well know its difficult to diagnose in this manner. a lot of info gets lost in the time between the car & the screen before your face. so dont bash, we are all here to help each other.
i'd like to see something implimented for all these open/unresolved repair threads. theres nothing worse than reading a 8 page thread w/ no ending. i cant beleave theres 10,000 cars riding around w/ noises, leaks, etc. since everyone should be searching before posting a new question, we need to make their search worth while. i considered doing a year end bump to all the threads i'm subscribed to that are still open, but that could get really annoying to others.
just a thought
john

great topic!
the kind community is what really keeps me so interested in this forum.... and the fact that the moderators are so responsive is freakin amazing, i still haven't gotten a response from the dsm forum....it's been a year... anyways, i agree with the above post that it is annoying having the same ? asked over and over again, but one thing i did like about the dsm forum, that they changed to because it wasn't originally like this, is similar to what the moderator said in the beg.
+be respectful
+if you don't have an answer or don't have a nice response...don't post.
lol like when i posted about emeralds sc in the modified a few weeks ago.... someone simply said that i was a month too late... very painless and not rude in any way... and it was shortly closed after that... that kind of respect and attentiveness, from both the mod and community, is what this forum is about! i haven't been here too long so i know i can't say much but i really do like this forum and would hate to see it go downhill!! KEEP IT UP GUYS!!!

This is kinda funny, I have been on CL for years on the GS forum, and most people know me on there. I just bought an SC400 last week to add to the stable, and I spent the last few days on the SC forums searching out how to mod this car. I have thought numerous times in the past few days how different the SC forums are compared to the GS forums. The GS guys are like a family for the most part, I dont get that feeling from the SC forums at all. I chalked it up to GS owners most likely being older and a more seasoned group of people. Thats a general statement obviously, but this thread couldnt be more timely for me.
I went to the Lexus after owning a few 800hp Supras, and I was big in the Supraforums for a few years. The one thing that I missed coming to CL on the GS forums is the availability of "real" knowledge of the technical performance stuff....probably due to not alot of people going FI on GS' at the time. Supraforums would teach you anything about your car you wanted to know, and people were happy to share it.....that forum is overflowing with technical data. The SC forums have the opportunity to have the same type of reputation with all of the available perfromance parts and avenues that the SC can take. Hopefully we can all embrace Daves request and start pushing it in that direction.
Ok, IM done preaching.....
