Default Collector Car Isurance for the SC

Has anyone successfully obtained collector car insurance on the SC?

I went to grundy.com, and for a 96 sc300 with an agreed value of 25K. the rate came to $385 for the year full coverage.

My allstate premium for the year is around $2000.

I will call and them on Monday to see if this online quote is available for our cars.

How exactly is it that an insurance company will think that a 1996 SC300 is currently worth $25k again?

With Grundy, I think they use an "agreed value" for the value of your car. I put down 25K because of turbo, etc. You can put a lesser value if you like depending on your modes, etc.

Why would you want collector's insurance on your SC? Are you planning on not driving a lot?

"Q: What are the limitations of collector vehicle insurance coverage - what's the "catch?

A: To keep "collector" rates low, American Collectors places certain usage restrictions on insured vehicles, such as: cannot be used for everyday driving; cannot be driven more than 2,500 miles per year; must be garage-kept. Very few collectors find these limitations to be a hindrance; in fact, most claim it would be difficult to put 2,500 miles/year on their collector vehicles and OF COURSE they keep their babies in a garage! "

I could do this

I have my car insured with my local all state agent for a bit over $70k... Replacement value for the car, parts, and labor to get it back to where it is.

Someone please light it on fire!

BTW, for this I just had to supply a list of all parts on the car, with approximate labor time to install. My premium didn't even go up, since none of it is really stuff that could be "easily" stolen like car audio, etc.

I called Grundy, unfortunately the car does not qualify as a a collector car. I asked them why, and the guy on the phone indicated, "have you seen Lexus in the Hemmings publication? that's the reason why!"

I guess we have to wait a few more years, when there is a more of a cult following like the corvettes, etc.

I agree that we will probaly have to wait until the car is at least 20-25 years old to be a classic, and it's certainly not an exotic. Of course, the Grundy "customer service" rep did hot have to be a smart a$$ about it. Last time I looked in Hemmings, they had ads for 1978 Caprice Classics, which, in my opinion, are crap. Maybe the Grundy smart guy should buy one of those.

I was quoted $490 for a $45k value, filled out all the info, and I'm awaiting a call.

You do know you can't use the car as a daily driver and such with this type of insurance....right? That voids it. As does driving it to work. Or vacation.

Collector car insurance has so many limitations(1 ticket in 3 years, must be garaged, must be approved, must have a copy of the daily drivers insurance dec page, and have newer autos. You disclose when you sign up how much and the type of driving you will do and if you wreck they will check. How else can they offer 50k coverage for so cheap. They know that these people are going to take all precautions to not wreck. And I do resent being called a "bastard" as I am an ALLSTATE agent...Thank the insurance fraud and the people with no insurance for your high rates, not the insurance companies. Many of the insurance companies have lost tons of money in the past few years on claims. If you are that pissed just cancel your damn insurance and go without. Okay then!
