Yes, the LS400 has had an adjustable air suspension option for a long time, and the ES has had optional Adaptive Variable Suspension (which I believe is electromagnetic) since '97. However, I think the Soarer had an even more complex system than either of these two models.

Has anyone in the US done some retrofits, like folding mirrors?

That's an Australian estimate.

I think your getting confused between air bag suspension and active suspension.

Active suspension is hydraulics that vary their rigidity and height actively with the movement of the car, this means when you throw hard into a corner, at a high speed, the car stays flat... dead flat!

This car cost $160,000+ AUD when new in japan (came with tv, touch screen, reversing camera, etc)

the $100,000 figure came from the fact that the active soarer cost close to double the regular V8 Limited. new SC400s were around $50k in the US, right?

I guess Lexus had to play it safe for a bit to get the buyer's confidence before bringing out the big guns...

At that price ($100K US) they should have dropped in a V-12. That would have made it a competitor against the BMW 850CSi. I don't know much about the Toyota Century, so I don't know when that engine was introduced, and whether it would fit in the Soarer engine bay.
