1996 sc300 engine sounds like a wind
Hi. I have 1996 sc300 and it usually sounds strong and sweet and loud. But sometimes when I step on the gas. It sounds like a wind. No more loud sound. Engine sound like I'm driving a pruis. Any help

nothing is leaking ? sounds like a compression issue or miss fire u need to check your cables coils and the compression in each cylinder. if you have a leak it could be the head gasket .

Welcome to ClubLexus, Kbatsc300!
When you rev the engine either at idle or under load does the engine sound very, very loud?
With the car shut OFF, try to move the front cooling fan's blades with your fingers. If there isn't free flow such that with some light pushing it doesn't spin a little on its own but rather is hard to move and has no free spinning it is a bad mechanical fan clutch.
Give this a check first before anything else. When a mechanical fan clutch fails it becomes locked in a 1:1 position rather than what should be a variable engagement depending on engine load. This means that when failed at 1:1 the fan is working harder and causing more drag on the engine at idle and throughout much the rev range. Hence the hurricane-like sound from the engine bay.
And check these threads to see if the symptoms appear to be similar to what you are experiencing:

And if this is the case, here is the DIY with the correct torque figures for the plastic fan blade assembly and overall procedure for replacement. Although if you have a regular mechanic whom you have a good relationship with this can also be done fairly quickly by the professionals (with their ALLDATA or these instructions).

To each his own. The factory 1JZ/2JZ mechanical fan with clutch has been proven to flow more air than most electric fan setups for JZ's while being dead reliable. The only setup I've heard of that people have not had any issues with at all is the factory IS300 twin electric fan assembly which is a swap some MKIV owners opt for.
