Default 92 SC 400, Temp gauge "HOT", w/ check eng. light

I am stumped. My 92 SC400 started having the temperature gauge climb to hot but then return to normal. Today the gauge went to hot with my daughter driving, then the check engine, then the overflow tank cracked at the cap.

I think it is a thermostat, maybe the water pump. BUT the odd thing is that the cabin air is not getting hot, at all, meaning no coolant is getting to the heat exchanger. Where would you start?

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

I would get a pressure tester and check for leaks. Sounds like there is plenty of air in the system. As the cooling system cools, it depressurizes and will draw air in where it is leaking. This will cause a spike on the temp gauge, as well as no heat. Low coolant will also cause no heat and overheating, so yeah, fix your leak and hope the engine isn't toasted.

Incase you can't find the leak also, there is UV dye you can purchase and put in your coolant, then at night use a black light on the car to find the leaking spot.

Good luck!
