defective ecu?
Hey guys been a long road think I got most of it so 96 sc400 cars running pretty well. I am getting a p03420 cel I have replaced both cam sensors and crank. Replaced timing belt and had my mechanics solder new caps into my ecu already. So my question is could my ecu still be def. Went on a 300 minute trip a few weeks ago and about halfway there it kind of loss power or fuel for a split second twice in a row then ran fine until the return trip did it twice again about half way. Now periodically it will do it seems like every 100 miles it'll do it. Just a guess but seems weird. Once again car runs damn near spot on other then this CEL any assistance is greatly appreciated

What mechanic soldered the new caps in? This is not something normal mechanics do, this is something you should have sent out to Tanin Electronix... It's possible the mechanic you hired to do it said he did, when he didn't and basically ripped you off.
If you think the ECU is the problem(and likely is) then send it to Tanin, they got mine on a Monday, fixed it, and shipped it the same day, it came back on Thursday. They have a very fast turn around time.

I agree with both posts above.....
Maybe I am a bit wasteful but I keep multiple ECU's for both my SC's. Most have been proactively rebuilt by Tanin. I use them often to see if a problem is likely to be ECU related. I swap them to see if the issue goes away. Just did that this weekend and it WAS the ECU in the car.
I keep one spare in each car and one in storage....
It's a bit over the top perhaps...

I had my mechanic do it while I was there brought the caps myself. I kno he did it properly what I dont kno is if the board was ****ed prior. I had purchased the car with known issues took me awhile to find this forum and find out about the ecu caps leaking so checked my ecu and sure enuf plus whoever did the caps in the stock ecu prior to me purchasing the car had one cap flipped which im assuming really did some damage. So I purchased a refurbed ecu installed it ran good for a day then same cel popped back up. So I tried myself to replace the caps on the old ecu heh let's just say that'll be the last time I try that. So the refurbed one I purchased had leaking caps also so thats the one I had my mechanic replace the caps in which fixed a lot of issues but the damn car is still throwing the bank one cam sensor CEL so im assuming the ecu is def new caps but guess the board could be shot. Anyone have the website go this ecu rebuilder? Thanks for the help

If the board is damaged down through the various layers, there's probably not much that can be done to save it. Mine was damaged on the surface and a circuit board specialist was able to rebuild the affected pins and traces. We had to just cross our fingers that the damage was confined to what was visible.

Doubtful. I spoke with a general automotive electronics specialist and was told they don't really have a set of bench tests they can carry out for full functionality. At $99/hr, that can get real steep as they test every function one at a time... I can't imagine were a non-specialist with only household equipment would even begin.

Thats what I was worried about. I tried to take it to an electrical specialist but when I told them it was blowing caps they wouldn't even touch it. I've put a ton of money into this thing and now the ecu should b that last step before I start my mods. Just dont wanna put more money into the ecu if its not whats wrong with it. Thanks for all the help I guess I gotta make a decision on if I wanna send this out or not. Whose should I contact if I do decide to send it out. Names websites numbers? Thanks a lot

There are lots of SCs in Florida. There's bound to be someone on CL with a known working ECU that you could try out to see if it solves your problem.
Tanin Auto Electronix is the approved vendor to contact. There are other options out there, but Tanin has done well by everyone it seems.
