Post Thoughts on a rear spoiler reverse light?

How difficult would it be to replace my rear spoiler led strip with bright white LED lights that at illuminated when I put the car in reverse?

Better check the legality of that first, sounds like a good way to get tickets.

I don't see why that would be illegal in any way at all. 3rd brake lights are not required and I'm not aware of any height issues with reverse lights.

The only hard part would be making a clear lens for the light housin. having just an led strip hanging there would be ugly, if i did it i would try getting the LEDs inside the housing and make a clear lens for it.

I don't know every regulation in every state, which is why I said to look it up. Your opinion doesn't matter to a judge if you get a ticket and there's a regulation about height or brightness on reverse lights. For example, in California the brightness of a reverse light may not exceed a distance of 75 feet. That's why I said to check, for the benefit of the person before they work on modifying the vehicle. http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/di...le=24600-24617

I could've sworn it's illegal to remove a 3rd brake light on a car that it was standard equipment on, i.e. anything built in the last 30+ years. Now, if you replaced it with the rear parcel shelf brake light for non-spoiler models, that shouldn't be a problem.

Good point... Shrugy IMO it's not worth wasting money on this conversion.

it might not be illegal....but...
i remember reading something about after 1986 nearly all cars(U.S.) were equipped with a center tail, trucks getting them later - everybody knows your suppose to have a center tail unless it's an old beast. you can get a fix-it ticket for having a blown out center, but if you completely removed it you could get the same(or you may go unnoticed). now if your converting it you may not get a fix-it ticket, but instead get a ticket for improper color of the center tail. now if you found a way to add another light, then you could have a spoiler reverse light...but you'd still need the center tail(car window or spoiler).
not worth it, unless your car is showroom only. or maybe you live someplace that has a no center tail law.

If I can find a way to make that lens clear and maybe even tint it a little bit? I am going to give it a whirl. I'm going to have to tap into my reverse light stuff anyways when I get my reverse camera setup.

Living in FL with no State inspection, I don't see me running into any issues

Until a cop is driving behind you and notices your center brake light doesn't light up when it should...

You'll probably find it hard to find any 3mm LEDs (I think that's the size of the standard LEDs just as a guess by looking??) that will throw enough light to be usable as a reverse light. I put some 1156 CREE LEDs off eBay in place of the standard globes, and they made a massive improvement.

Any small LEDS you'll be able to fit in the standard 3rd brake light are not gonna be anywhere near as bright as any replacement for the standard reverse globes, small LEDs that size just do not throw enough light. They can appear bright looking at them, but they're unable to throw any useable light on the ground where you need it. You need some massive LED chips which have no chance of fitting in the brake light housing.
