Default Speedometer Mystery

So over the past couple of days my speedometer has gone from working fine with the exception of the needle slightly bouncing, to working intermittently. Sometimes while driving it will register 0, come to a stop, and then it starts to work again. The needle never dies and falls to 0 when it is working properly. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it only registers 0 while driving usually right after a start up. I just find it strange that a speedo would work intermittently like that, instead of going out and never working again lol

Sounds to me like the stepper motor is wearing out. Will run you around $100 to repair.

I kind of had an idea that it might have been the stepper motor acting up. But it is weird, it will not work when the car is cold, once it warms up and gets going down the road it starts to work. It's like once the car makes it to a stop it might or might not do it from 0. Haven't tried tapping the top of the dash bc it normally does work, but I plan on replacing the stepper motor when I go to pull the entire unit out to do an LED backlight conversionx. Along with fixing my all blacked out needles I currently have going on right now. It's a work in progress, but I'd definitely say its serving its purpose as my daily/fixer-upper which I love. I do wonder why I'm only getting about 250 miles per fill up? I have done a new fuel filter(which helped with acceleration tremendously), and have been running 93 octane from Exxon. I plan to tackle the spark plugs next to see if I can pick up an extra few mpg, but no complaints here.
