(1) Yes it is the weaker motor if the OP was planning to boost the stock motor, which he didn't metion NOTHING about a boosted car. (Below is a quote of what the OP is looking for)
(2) Please explain to me what makes it more complicated ? the only difference between a vvt-i and a non-vvti is that the vvt-i has thinner rods and a vvt-i drum that advance and retards timing and in it stock form it just as easy to fix and relaible as the non vvt-i and ANY competent mechanic should have no problem repairing it so please be more specific when you say more complicated. (Keep in mind the OP didn't mention boost ) so there is nothing complicated here.

I do like the 97+ look, but I probably won't be doing much modifications to the car , just want a 5spd to drive around. Maybe I should try and find other cars other than sc300 lol. But If I get another car idk what to get because I would feel like i'm downgrading from my sc400.

I paid $2800 for my black on black 95' 5-speed with 137k miles. It was issued a rebuilt salvage title in 1996 with 30k miles.

It does need some work though but did come with 18" XXR wheels. I looked for about 3 months and luckily was able to put the money together at the right time.

If you're looking to just have one as a DD then get one with low mileage. If you're wanting to boost/swap the miles don't really matter too much IMO.

I'll weigh in here witha little perspective. I'm 62 years old and have been a car nut since my parents can remember. The SC series was a radical breakthrough car from the moment it was introduced. Lexus knew they had to hit it out of the park to establish credibility and they spared no expense. The rounded shape and smooth lines were frequently imitated but never duplicated. It was and still is one of the most reliable, best engineered cars of its era if not ever. The manual transmission versions sold poorly because they were marketed as luxury vehicles and in that market an automatic and V8 were the standard. Turns out the 2gz combined with the 5spd are a bulletproof combination and since they sold poorly they are now fairly rare. I follow the car market religiously and I constantly see mid 90's Mustangs, Hondas, nissans, 4Runners,etc commanding 5k and above with high mileage. They are in no way comparable to an SC. Twenty years from now the sc 300 that started this thread will be on Barrett-Jackson and you guys will be saying "I could have bought that car for $6000 in 2013." Ask me how I know. The manual transmission SC300 is a future collectible.

I think I would pay $7200 for that. A clean SC will pull close to $5k or more and the swap/turbo kit alone would be more than $2k. $6-8k is what I've seen a lot of 1JZ or NA-T Sc300s go for.

If everything is good thats not a bad price at all for a 1jz swapped SC
I personally would do the swap myself instead of buying one already done tho.

Why was it at the auction? Is the title clean or salvaged? After so many years the ODO mileage should be exempt at this point and could be the reason why its no longer recorded. Im surpised its been recorded for that long on a 93.

I think a lot of states don't even bother with odometers after 10 or so years. It was weird to me because when I lived in Kansas, no matter what they always ask and state the odometer reading on the vehicle even if it's old as ****.

It must have been some thing minor I am assuming, it said it had no records of accidents. The only problem it stated was the odometer problem. There was some kind of a rollback. The last record of the mileage was at 160k in 2011.
