Default Would you buy a late-model SC300(VVT-i) with high miles?

Say, between 150k-200k miles, one owner maintained. What typically fails and needs replacing?

Like there is a choice. The newest one is 12 years old.

Yeah same thing here, I Just got a 99 400 with 179k on the dash, but just do the maintenance and it'll be good, As long as the price isn't too high, its going to be solid if its been maintained.

I would as long as I wasn't compromising quality for price. Like all things, it's what it's worth to you at the end of the day. As failures go, it is subjective to climate, storage and care. That said, I would do it if the color suited me.

240,000 miles here. They're old cars. They will break. Not any worse than average but it's reality.
Luckily, there is a massive community centered around this platform and all the sister platform mates so everything that can, will, or should break has been well documented and cheaper alternate fixes have been explored. Generally speaking, later models of a particular platform have had their kinks worked out and should be most promising long term. 200k miles on on the 2JZ is NOTHING. Seriously. There are people with 400k miles on original non-rebuilt motors.

Like everyone has stated, YES!

I love these engines.. they can last forever.. its especially good that its only been with one owner.. I mean as long as hes done.. even, an okay, job at tuning up his car you wont have to do much...

I got a 92' with 180k miles on it and have had to replace the following keep in mind it had 3 owners..

spark plugs
dist cap rotr
fuel pump and mod
fuel filter
clutch
clutch master cylinder and slave
AC compressor

So yes its extensive but i think worth it to know you have a reliable car

also for me i need to fix

Timing belt
water pump
power steering hose leak
pvc valve
control arm bushings
motor mounts

So basically everything you need to do make sure you ask what has been done already

Really? 2JZ? This isn't an urban legend or anything right? I've read about many high mileage stories of the 1UZ, but not much of the 2JZ since many become modded.

I'm looking at a few cars, '99-'00, all of them 1 owner with maintenance records, completely stock, no accidents, and in excellent condition. What's a amount to offer for the mileage range in the initial post?

What do you estimate all this to cost? Thanks for your response.

Pricing varies based on overall condition of the car and location. If the car still has nice paint and interior I would pay more for the car. I have a 98 SC300 with 165k miles very well maintained, clean paint, and clean interior (besides 1 tear in the driver seat) and I would ask for 7k in my area.

I've done most of these on my car. I bought the parts and did the labor myself.

Timing belt, water pump, tensioners, and all related parts - $500 in parts
Power steering hose was - $80 for parts and fluids
PCV valve - I haven't had to replace
Control arm bushings - about 500-600 for supra LCA arms (better to replace the bushings and ball joints at this age)
Motor mounts - I don't remember how much this costs.

Aside from the things listed above, the only other major issues I can think of are the rear main seal and vvti cam gear seal leaking oil. The vvti cam gear has to be replaced since toyota/lexus won't sell the seal by itself. The cam gear is a few hundred, and is basically the same as changing the timing belt, so I would do it at the same time if the seal is leaking oil.

280 for oem? I guess I should have broke down what was included in that 500:

Timing belt, timing belt tensioner, water pump, thermostat, thermostat gaskets, serpentine belt, serpentine belt tensioner, bolts, and fluids. (You probably don't have to buy new oem bolts)

Only if it was really clean and pretty cheap, the 98+ SC300's aren't something you can't turn the older SC's into. Only SC's anybody wants is a clean manual SC300 or 98 SC400, considering it's bone stock.
