Moderators, how about linking this thread in some sort of FAQ? Every other week, some newbie shows up asking how to remove the wood on the dash and this is the most detailed explanation I've seen yet.

Josh, I love newbies. Their new and interesting questions and ideas are always welcome. (that is my politically correct reply)

J/P guys. got nothin but love for the newbies. I was one once too, although I did use the search function more than most.

Reminds me of a quote,

" I was once like you, then I evolved."

Default What he said...

When I bought my car in 1997, the dealer gave me an invoice showing me the work they did to bring it up to Certified condition. Included was a "register assy. instr" (part # 5566024071) costing either $70 or $93.

If that's the same part that we're talking about, mine's been good for 8 years and 47K miles.

anyone know how much this part costs at a lexus dealer? I'll probably replace mine when I redo my interior.

$174 for this damn vent. Go through Carson Toyota and order it from Gordon, he'll give you a decent discount. Use the part number Perry gave in the above post, the Lexus computers will say it's for a 97-2000 SC but this part number supercedes the original part number for the vent from the 92-94 SC's. Good luck.

None. You're not absorbing the information. Using glue is pointless.

6. Release the clip at the left end of the vent assembly that attaches it to the vehicle. Gently maneuver the vent/trim assembly until it can easily be removed. Take it to a suitable work table and proceed as instructed below.

whats the best way to get to that clip. i cant get the thing out. is it only the one nut and the clip that it holding it in?

yeah, and i'm glad i found this write up. i have everything out from the dash dying process. and i cracked the clip on the vent assembly, so i've been waiting to put the car back together till i get a new vent. now, i can put my car back together, and just throw the vent in when i get it. climate control and radio, here i come.

This is a great guide with great pics, I’m glad it was resurrected.

One of the reasons I’ve never tried to repair or replace my cracked vent is because I thought it would just go and crack again. I’m really glad people chimed in with their long term successes with replacement. I wonder if the plastic is just better on the newer vents or what it is that seems to make them last?
