How do larger wheels affect ride and handling?

I think some SCs pull off 19s very well. However when I tried 19" Volks I didn't really like how the car felt. It was noticeably slower than it already is and also affected gas mileage for sure. I started with 18s and went back to 18s and am happy with them for daily driving and road trips to Cali.

Those may be my favorite wheels.

Are those 19's, or 18's? ^
I dunno if it's 'cus they're black (which tends to make things appear smaller), or 'cus the cars lowered, but surprisingly-enough, these don't look that big. I would've expected 20's to look HUGE; like big-pimpin' huge ...
Anyone else got 20's, and have a side shot?

i simply went 18" since i was on a budget when i bought my wheels for dirt cheap, can't make myself buy new wheels now that i have extra money though since the ones on my car do the job and i don't car how dirty or scratch up they get. going to try a taller tire up front though, a 45 series, to make up for some gap.
i would vote 19" if there was a poll.

Im on 20s with 35 series tires. I would say that sidewall profile factors into comfort and handling more than handling. Bigger wheels are generally heavier. I cant complain with the ride quality that I have. Here's my car:

I had 19x8.5 w/ 235/35/19 and 19x9.5 w/ 265/30/19 on Stance GR coilovers with prothane bushings front/back. It was a rough ride and had to dodge pot holes and anything else at all costs. Always joked I was going to get pulled over for swerving all over the place. Steering response was great because there was next to nothing for sidewall.
I now have some 17x7 with 235/45/17 all around on Megan EZ and prothanes and the ride is definitely more comfortable but I still try to avoid pot holes as much as possible. They give a little more in corners due to the taller sidewall.
For DD in NY I would go 17's or 18's. It will allow you to run a taller sidewall which is actually the first "spring" in your suspension. It will absorb impacts better, especially if you're still on the stock suspension. Plus the wheels weigh less, they cost less, tires are cheaper, you get more options in tires, and are more readily available at shops if you ever blow one out.
