Upper Control Panel
So I have my new cup holder and need to remove the control panel on my '93. The manual's instructions for removing the upper control panel rear (this is the one with the shifter through it) notes that to remove that panel, you need to open the ash tray lid, press in inside the tray and meanwhile, slide your finger inside the shifter slot and lift up and out. There are 4 clips at the front of the panel. The panel needs to come off in order to get access to the 4 screws holding the other panel down. Well, I'm not having much luck with their technique and I certainly don't want to force it and break an expensive piece of plastic. Has anyone done this? Thanks.

There are instructions and pics in a thread here. Try searching for it.
To install the cup holder, you don't have to remove the control panel thou.
You just need to get that back plate out of the slot. The panel is just clipped in and if you have a pick or a bent screwdriver, the panel will come right out. I just drilled a hole in it and pulled it right out.

You're absolutely right. I took a threaded awl and screwed it into the back plate and applied a little more force than I was comfortable with but it popped right out. A 5 min. job at the most. Thanks again. Someday, I'll have to take that panel off to access radio, etc., but that can wait for now.
