Question Is300 Steering Wheel?

Hey guys was wondering how difficult is was to install an IS 300 steering wheel on the SC. Also about what price should I expect to pay for the steering wheel. What all parts/tools will be needed to switch them out?

It took me about 5 minutes to remove and install the steering wheel. You will need to splice your SRS harness plug and solder it into the IS300's harness plug. Total time should take you anywhere between 10-40 minutes. The trick to remove the steering wheel is to actually tighten it, to break it loose, and then remove the nut. You will need Torx bits, I believe T27 for the SC steering wheel and the IS300 wheel should have smaller Torx size. Cost of the steering wheel and airbag, can go anywhere from $100-250 depending on the condition. I got lucky and bought mine off craigslist for $100 with air bag and it was in a pretty good condition

I found one on CL for $60 with airbag Should I purchase a new wiring harness instead or is soldering it fairly easy?

Never taken a steering wheel off before just seem a little hesitant about doing so.

I wouldn't mess with airbag wiring. That's an explosive device, remember. Buy the Toyota SPX conversion wire to use the newer airbag with your older connector. You need a steering wheel puller from Autozone/Pep Boys/etc. Usually you can rent those.

I believe it is a Torx T30 for the airbag screws.

Disconnect the battery for AT LEAST 90 seconds before doing any unplugging of airbags. The system retains a charge for at least that long after eletrical current is lost to the airbag. You don't want that thing blowing up in your face while removing it. Follow that rule and all will be fine.

Also, keep your cruise control stalk from your SC steering wheel. You'll need to transplant that to the IS300 wheel. If you instead have a near-identical Toyota three-spoke from a Celica, Matrix, MR2 or even a RAV4 you may have to drill/dremel the location for the SC cruise stalk and also tap the unmacchined hole that is the mounting point for what would have been factory cruise on the new steering wheel. Just reuse your SC cruise stalk screw and tap for that. I forget the size for the tap but it's around if you search. If it's definitely an IS300 wheel then probably just stick with whatever screw came on the cruise stalk from that (if it hasn't been removed).

If you dont want to mess with the harness, then jump the harness. I'd perfer to just splice and solder+heat shrink. You do not need a steering wheel puller, just tighten it and then remove the nut. You'll be able to simply pull it out. Forgot the Battery part and cruise control part.

Also when you remove the air bag, place it upwards. That way if it does blow up for some odd reason, it wont go flying 200ft in the air. It's possibly for the airbag to still have some sort of current in there to set it off

As a cheap tip, try to find an IS200 wheel and airbag. Picked mine up for less than $50 USD shipped from the UK. They're a dime a dozen and they have a proper L logo unlike the Toyota sourced airbags.

The UK ebay has one for about ~$35 plus shipping.
