Post Chance to buy 1992 SC400

I am brand new to this forum.
I have a chance to buy a mint condition 1992 SC400 with 77,000 miles on it.
The car is in practically new condition, every option. The owner wants $9000 for it. This seems fair given the milage and condition.
Is there anything I should look for or check out? Visually, it is stunning. Garage kept, all maintenance done, newer timing belt, new tires. Not a scratch or dent or scuff in interior.

Thanks,
Bill

Price seems kind of high, if you could maybe get it down $2000 and it checks out with a mechanic I'd buy it.

If the car is mint and original condition, that is a very fair price. Too many people here will tell you "I bought this car for this amount of money"...it's all relative. No two cars are in the same condition. Much wiser to get a perfect platform off the bat than a beater that you will have to repaint and use bondo on and swap out the interior on.

I am sure he would take $7000 if you waived it in his face

But 7500-8k seems pretty fair. If I had the money Id do it.

Spend the money buying this car so you won't have to spend it fixing and repairing every little thing. The same people here who say you would overpay seem to also be willing to spend that amount of money putting a lesser car back into that kind of condition so just skip the middle man.

Like every car sale there's a little wiggle room but I'd say if it's truly showroom then the $8k neighborhood isn't absurd. That money will buy you a later year SC but not in that condition.

Some things can't be avoided my maintenance, like the bad capacitors of the ECU and fuel pump computers. The ECU can be fixed ($250, right there in FL where you are) and the fuel pump can be fixed or hardwired. I'd replace all the vac hoses due to age (under $20 and 30 mins).

A car like that leaves you doing more of the mods you want to do rather than work you have to do.

What can you buy for 9k that drives & looks as good as an SC with only 77k? NOT MUCH! Plus the fact that other than power steering leaks & dash lights going out, it's dang reliable. I've had one 400 & two 300's & I'm always looking for more. What color is it?

I totally agree. Too many people buy cheaper SC's and end up spending more just getting it to look decent, rather than just buying a clean SC from the beginning.

I'll add this part too then: Nobody who isn't at least "ok" at turning wrenches on their own should buy a 20 year old car. Paying someone to diagnose and fix every little thing that can and will go wrong with a car this old will cost a fortune.

Anyone not interested in maintaining their Shadetree Mechanic certification should consider a newer car.

Yea, seeing how I only buy old 90's cars. I am used to wrenching on them. A while ago, I sold my non-turbo 92 Eagle Talon to a friend. A bit later, he found 2 zip ties on the radiator and that it leaked oil... and he freaked out and thought I sold him a junk car. * mind you the car is 20 years old with 180,000 miles* while I kinda ignored him and just figured he was a complete retard like most people these days, he was still pretty upset. So yeh don;t be like him.

Your friend should be grateful that's the ONLY thing wrong with that car...
