I remember that there were a great amount of recalls for the 8-Series when they first came out. If you're willing to spend the money to maintain it then go for it. If it's your daily and you don't have a back-up car? I wouldn't do it.
This is coming from an 8-series fan.
Good Luck to you either way!

i just got a 94 320i when i moved to germany and the thing runs fine at 175,000 kilometers only thing that was wrong with it was the suspension was blown, tie rods were shot and the Vanos needed replacing but all this was because my brother is one of those people who dont do crap to fix the cars he drives. so i was stuck with it after all that was said and done NOT one electrical problem with the car and it has 2 12 inch subs in the trunk(brother again)....
idk about the different alloy stuff but if i were you i would change to a bmw... although i miss my sc this bimmer drives NICE

v12 is boss! i remember looking at a white 8 series and it was all good until i drove it for 10-15 min and started finding a bunch of little things wrong with the car(switches and panels were loose or could come off). It came down to me not wanting to change all of it, i didnt know squat about it let alone the engine size-gas and grey market doing who knows what to the parts available. I ended there and never looked back but someone in my hood has a clean white one. They both rawr!

From what I've read, and what owners have shared with me, the 850 (V12) was a really nice vehicle in its day, same as the SC's. There is however, a reputation for the V12 models to have more mechanical issues than other Beemers of that era. I would never tell you that all V12 850's were lemons, but I would be mindful of its reputation. Im the same fashion that SC's are known for having worn control arm bushings, and faulty lights on our gauge clusters. Just a thought. .

8-series are beautiful (in a MA70 kinda way), but they did have a lot of problems, and if something were to go wrong it'd be hard to find parts.
I've always wanted an 8-series, but the cost of everything, didn't really justify it.
From an economy stand point, I wouldn't do it, from the "wow, weird lookin' car" stand point, I'd do it.
