Default Pictures: what was the previous owner doing to my headlights?

So I've started my research into how I will wire up my 97 fog lights and I looked at the wiring harness for the main headlight bulbs and original 15W cornering lamp bulbs.

It definitely looks like something was done to this before I bought the car. Could this have been an HID installation that was removed prior to sale or perhaps a few years prior?

When I bought it there was only one woman owner on record for this car since 1992. The only giveaway that the owner knew about its performance were the Soarer griffin/lion center caps on '96 7-spoke rims.

I'm just curious if this suggests that more that was modified on the car and later removed prior to my buying it.

since it was a long time ago, maybe they did one of those higher wattage bulbs (before the HIDs were popular and common) and burnt the wiring so they got new upgraded wiring harness then it didn't work so they put it back stock?

^^This. Im willing to bet they had those high wattage bulbs and the harness melted, and just cut and spliced new plugs on.

This sounds right to me too. Thanks guys. When I go HID in the future I plan to clean up this patch job on the wiring.

Any front end accidents? Kind of an odd place to burn out wiring from using too large of a bulb.

I vote for "cut harness after front end repair"

I suggest you solder those wires up and do a better job than that, lucky they didnt create a short.

No accidents. No history of it on the CarFax and no damage or irregularities with the front end bodywork. When I changed out the front bumper it was totally clean behind it. The car has rock chips on the hood and some minor tiny dings but no repaired damage that I could tell before I bought it.

Biggu, those cornering lamps had factory 15W bulbs in them when I switched to a 97 bumper and there was no aftermarket relay or wiring in the engine compartment or the interior that would suggest a previous fog light conversion. Just the wonky rewired headlight and corner lamp wires.

I've already installed 97 fogs with the 55W bulbs but I haven't wired them up yet.

Edit:

I did some thorough looking around and found my cornering lamp leads. They were just dangling with a little bit of electrical tape over them. I am going to de-splice my low beam wires and set them back to OEM with some crimps and some wire covering in preparation for a Phillips 4200K HID PnP installation.

Should I do anything at all with the currently unused cornering lamp leads? I was thinking of using them as a convenient relay trigger for my 97 fog lamp conversion but since they are not constantly on (correct?) perhaps that isn't a good choice?

Update:

Restored the low beam connector harnesses. Man, what a hack job that was. Now onto wiring the fog lamps.
