Default SC400 trunk hydraulics.

The hydraulics on my 92 sc400's trunk went out, but the hood is still good. Any advice on a do it yourself job?

buy new ones, unclip old ones. install new ones. takes maybe 10 min or rear including taking out the trunk carpet stuff. lil metsal clips hold the gas shock in place. i use needle nose plyers or a small flat blade screwdriver.

Be sure that when you get OEM replacement trunk shocks, You get the ones with the "RED" bands around 'em and not the ones with the "GREEN" bands around 'em...Why? Because the shocks with the red bands around 'em are for trunks that have a spoiler (Shocks are stronger) on 'em while the green ones are for trunks with no spoiler on 'em.

Haha nice I'm starting to like O'Reilly too, My first car was a ricer, had aluminum doors and trunk, went fast and was easy to push when I had to but was very unsafe, fun above all though. It was a 2000 Hyundai Elantra. R.I.P.

The pivot bolts are generally difficult to remove since they have locktite on them. Heating them up a bit softens the locktite making them much easier to remove. Done it on both trunk & hood supports for '92 SC400.

Ah yes, very good, I should be fine, but I'll search for a few diagrams just to be safe. I've never owned a car nearly this nice before. I've had an 00 Elantra, 03 Focus, 99 Neon, 01 Protege, and 04 Rio before. The Focus was the only one that wasn't a disaster.

I just went through changing the trunk lift supports about a week ago. After reading the many posts about it, and seeing the photographs that have been posted on these forums, my friend (he did all the real work) got them changed in about 15 minutes. The "loc-tited" bolt came off fairly easily without using any heat. We were lucky on that one. The guy selling the supports on e-bay has his office right near where I live, so I drove over and picked them up from him. I got ones for "spoiler" even though I have NO spoiler on my SC300. The new ones are strong and my trunk POPs up nicely now, after several years of having to prop it open with my golf club!! HA HA Now to deal with the SQUEALING Harmonic Balancer next. Wish me luck?

Nice, a little extra strength is good. Hehe I've been using a plastic plumbing pipe in the mean time. Good luck with the harmonic balancer, I gotta figure out what the heck that is anyways!
