Many Toyota dealers have this for $5-6/quart. However, the previous post is a bit simplistic. T-IV is very close to Dex-III, it was based on Dex-III and came out around the same time (you will find this is a common theme in ATF) just as the new Toyota WS fluid looks remarkably like Dex-VI which came out at the same time. If you can't find a source for T-IV, Valvoline's MaxLife DEX/MERC is an excellent substitute.

You'll find posts on here, yotatech and toyotanation indicating favorable use of Valvoline MaxLife.

Sounds excellent. Although I wouldn't have a heart attack if that other stuff was in there, I'm gonna go ahead and do the wiser thing and get the real deal. $5-6 a quart? That isn't very expensive to me, not for what it gets you, and I make $830 a month!

It's not something that has to be changed very often. I'd just get the type IV.

i'm sorry but thats crap you can use other fluids Dextron III wont work. Most aftermarket Synthetic Trans fluids will work, i use Royal Purple in the gs its more expensive and better quality then toyota stuff anyway. You can also use Amsoil and Castrol. Toyota does not make their own trans fluid, they buy from other companys.

To those of you who say that a substitute is fine, I respect your opinion and thank goodness you all had good experiences with it. But the real stuff is more expensive by such an insignificant amount, and it's the only stuff specifically designed for my engine that the choice is clear. Thank you everyone for your advice and God bless.

Amsoil and Royal Purple are more expensive then toyota "OEM" fluid. You ask a question you get an answer but at the same time you already have your mind made up...why ask a question then?
