Default anyone ever blown their engine??????

Hey guys,

I just recently had a very scary moment with my 1uz that happened to me while going fast and being a little hard on the engine.

It worked out very well-thank god-but I was convinced It was ruined.

My question is with all the modding, swapping , turboing, supecharging and being hard on these engines in general there must be some people who have blown their engine or at least done some serious damage.

Blown a head gasket, cracked the head etc......

Or are these engines really that good?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

It's when your entire car explodes and the police need to determine identity by dental forensics.

jk, it's a bad thing though.

When your timing, Boost and Fuel arnt working together detonation occurs. Detonation typically happens to Turbo'd NA motors that are set for a Different Timing and Spark Curve. a Map sensor has a lot to do wth keeping these things correct and prevent detonation.

ahhhh i see,

im assuming when the timing, spark, fuel, air and whatnot is not in perfect order the engine can pretty much self destruct......KABOOM

Heh, they are really that good! Toyota put a lot of r&d into the 1uzfe and its reliability is legendary. That's not saying they wont ever experience catastrophic failure, though.

The motor BenStoked mentioned was not a 1uz.

Detonation is also called "knocking" and occurs for various reasons like running too lean for example.

yes everything ive learned about this engine tells me it really is a great engine all around.

and one of the most long lasting and reliable engines out there.

I was heartbroekn when i thought i did damage to it.

I thought i blew it a few days ago---last friday actually---it started smoking--started whining----than concked out-----than wouldnt run properly---shaking violently--misfiring ----thank god it turned out to be the drivers side coil that gave out ----$200 fix.

I thought maybe i blew the head gasket or possibly cracked the head or something bad like that.

My mechanic and his assistant are also very impressed with this engine.

He said he thinks it would take alot to damage this engine and i think he is right.

nevertheless im done being hard on my car lol -----i should show it the respect it deserves

thats okay i am interested in hearing about them as well as they seem to be getting aslot more abuse than the 1uz due to the constant boosting and whatnot.

i have been on thius forum for well ove3r a year now and not once have i heard of anyone cracking a head or even damaging the engine itself in some way.

alot of people have engine troubles but its ussually a sensor or an ecu or coils or plugs or whatever--never the actual engine itself.

and from what it seems most of the people here like to push their car to the limits.

im still awaiting to hear more from people though.

there must of been someone whos wrecked one of these engines by pushing it too far.

Dont quote me on this but I read something, somewhere that said that as to Toyota's knowledge, to date, there has never been a report of catastrophic engine failure in any vehicle with a 1uz (gs400, ls400, sc400, soarer, aristo, celsior and crown majestic) that hasnt been proven to have been missused or abused.

I just spent about 20 mins trying to find that article with no luck. If anyone else can find it, please post the link.
