Sell your SC vs. painting your SC
Ok. here"s the deal. I have a 1995 SC400 with 166k. No mechanical issues,
Black with Black interior. The black interior is near mint, but the outside could use a paint job. not that its bad, but i would like perfection.
I have been quoted around the $3500 range for a nice paint job.
Now. I want a factory 97+kit, as well as tails which i don't have. and also plan to do a 2JZ swap in the spring. I could possibly get around $5,000 for it and add the $3500 for the paint job and just get a 98-99 sc400 if i could find one in good shape inside and out that doesnt need a paint job.
and do the swap the following year......what do guys think.

Keep it unless 98-99 models are just cheap around your area. And 3500 is kinda high, but that's my opinion unless you're going with a full color change. Cause if you're keeping it black, then you don't need to do door jams and engine bay.

I will keep it, just painting the outside since it's already black should be ~2k .
If you buy a 98-2000 SC4 first you won't pass emissions, since the OBD2 port won't be functional.
I would do the suspension first control arm bushings, sway bar links, TT brakes or LS4Chrome TT wheels they look sick on Black SCs.
Then procede with the swap then the exterior stuff comes later then you can paint the whole car once you get all the 97+ conversion parts this is what i would do.3
No i wouldn't spend 9k on 98-2000 SC, that's just me.

as quickGS300 mentioned, I'd keep your current SC and this is why. A newer 1998+ model is still going to have suspension wear and tear so you'll need to replace the bushings on your current ride or a newer one. Since your interior is mint and we live in the DC area, the prices are higher for everything. It's going to take you time to find a newer SC with black interior for a reasonable price. Since you already have one, take care of the maintenance things and gather the conversion pieces later. Once you have everything, get your car painted (or wrapped) at that point. I've learned my lesson and have decided to fix my current vehicle. I'm been very happy with my decision and in the long run I'm sure you will be too. Plus you get to see a complete transformation of your vehicle and look at it with pride.

Why not sand, prime, and paint the bad areas yourself? You'd save a MASSIVE amount of money, and its not all that hard to do. Doesn't the Toyota dealership sell color match spray paint for that year on that Lexus? Plus, you'd get the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

^Well surely, it wouldn't look any worse than it is now. I don't think it would be a bad idea at all. Besides, it sounds like he is hell bent about selling it anyhow.

Just trying to see whats cheaper. $1000 for a used oem kit with fogs, $200 for used 97+ tails, then paint job even at $2000 would mean i'll spend roughly $3200. that plus $5000 if i sold my 95sc would be $8200
I rough decision......
