Default Question: Ipod to stock stereo

I found this DIY and it makes complete sense. However, I don't have time right now to go through 37 pages worth of info to possibly find the answer to my question.

In this DIY, the CD changer is still functional with the added benefit of an ipod connection. My question is, if I don't care about the CD changer anymore, can't I skip a lot of the wiring and disregard using relays if I just want the ipod to work and nothing else?

This diagram is pretty self explanatory on the wiring...

However, can't I just do this and skip using any of the relays and such....

No, you could get a actual ipod cable with the 30 pins and tap into the cigarette lighter but that's more work. lol

My friend and I have done this. Love it! Worth the time and effort. Don't forget to get an old cd that won't work, or scratch up one you don't care about. You'll need the system to show ERR on the display in order to hear your ipod. That's what we had to do anyway.

Yea that's what I was thinking because if there isn't anything in there then the stereo will reject the cd option and go straight into stereo mode.

I did all the wiring last night but couldn't test it out because I lost the stupid rca to head phone jack wire. I'm going to go buy one this morning and confirm it.

If it works well enough I'll do a DIY

The wiring I did works awesome and sounds better than cd quality. It really brings out the potential of the stock stereo. At work right now, but just letting you guys know it's confirmed. I'm at work right now and I'll be doing a DIY for those that want to go this route. I'll have it posted by tonight.

It's like this...

1. Find the plug behind the headunit with the 4 cables coming from the cd changer. (Red white blue and blacl which are the cr- cdr+ cdl- cdl+)

2. Purchase the RCA to speaker wire connectors from radioshack and connect them those 4 wires I mentioned, and yes I would recommend soldering for a better connection.

3. At this point you're pretty much finished. Put the female to female rca couplers to the rca male side of the wires you just wired, then to the other side of the couplers connect the rca to iPod or headphone jack.

4. You're finished and hide the wiring where ever you would like. I chose the center console for easy access and a clean look.

I know that description is pretty vague with no pictures but that should give you a good idea. I should have pics up by tonight.
