the way a tire appears on a wheel depends not only on tread width, but also on brand and sidewall, so in some cases 225 on 8.5 would look square, on others, 255 would. i personally wouldn't run anything over 245's on 8.5, just because 245 is already an inch more than 8.5 give or take depending on the brand and their basis of measuring tread.

^^if what you say is true and the 225s on the 2is 8" are slightly stretched, this is a perfect example. the 225s on my 8" wide blitz for my tC are perfectly square, if not a bit on the pudgy side, b/c of my bigger sidewall and also, sumitomo's tend to run fatter and squarer than others. so unless we start throwing in more factors into this equation, this debate won't be going too far.

thanks for the pics and info.. i decided not to go with 245's in back. im going to move my 255's from the front to the back and buy 225's for the front. just waiting on the tire shop to open..

I agree with BartleDoo.......235 or 245 on a 10-inch wheel is insane........I have 295's on my rear 10-inch wheels and they are flush with the rim. Why would you want to buy expensive custom wheels and leave them exposed to the first curb you park next to. Also, what's the point of having wide wheels if not to put more rubber on the ground for traction? Stretching seems to be more for appearances and to permit "slamming". I doubt that anyone could tell the difference in handling from a stretched tire. That is, no one is going to feel the tire rolling. Perhaps they might notice the sparks when the edge of the wheels contact the pavement..........Ok, just exagerrating. Anyway, to each his or her own but 255 on an 8.5 inch wheel is appropriate as evidenced by OEM tire specifications for the IS. I have 245's on my front 8-inch wheels and they are flush or square as BartleDoo said. More importantly they are in accordance with the total final wheel/tire diameter specified by Lexus when they designed the SC.

if you do decide on 245/35, toyo t1r, failken fk451, or even the nexen n3000 are great tires to stretch. 255/35 is the minimum recommended by tire manufacturers for 10" wheels, so you're not that far off from spec as long as you don't mind the harsher ride. if you're not boosted or tracking the car, there's really nothing against stretched tires

i'm 235/35-19 on 10"

less? you just calculated the wheel width, which is less than 245mm (the width of the tire).
your first part was correct, 8.5in < 245mm. 8.5 is over an inch less than 245mm.

you guys do know that you are suppose to add an inch on top of the rated barrel width to get the accurate tire size right?

so for example, 8.5" wheels = 9.5" total, 9.5 x 25.4mm = 241.3

which means you can either go with 235 or 245. most of the time it is 235.

245 on a 10" wheel is a bit too small for my tastes. I ran a 275 on a 9.5". Currently the 275 is on a 10.5", definitely the smallest that I will ever go. I like to be able to fit a decent amount of rubber of my wheels.

Different strokes for different folks.

That's what I meant, but I was reading what you were saying wrong anyways.
