Default Alternator replacements for a 1JZ?

Well today I was driving to arby's and to the bank to get some cash out, and of course, something went wrong with the car.. I was noticing the battery light was coming on at idle, and the AFR was 10-11.5 just idling, and normal while driving. So I'm trying to think of reasons why this is happening, and as I'm sitting in line for the drive up atm, eating my arbys, I look down and see the temp gauge is above the red. I'm shocked as the car is barely even warm, so I pull in to a parking spot and opened up the hood, and the car was just barely warmed up, no steam no signs of overheating. so I started driving the 2 miles home, and the temp gauge starts going back down as mysteriously as it went up. Once it's back in the normal range I did a little boost pull to see if its breaking up, and it pulls fine, after the pull the temp was below normal, go figure..

So I parked it in the garage, went inside and came back out 2 hours later and started it up, it made some noises I haven't heard before and while idling, it was 750-800 versus the normal 550-600 and the battery light was on. So then I called the old man out to stare at the engine while I revved a little to get the battery light to turn on and off, turns out the alternator is producing a flickering light. Needless to say, I need a new alternator, my question is which will work? I know the standard soarer 1jz will be the ticket, but these aren't so easy to come by, will a 2jzge/gte alternator work?

Either 2J one will work, but you may need the plug to go with it as the plugs are different between the 1JZ and 2JZ alt.

I think mine is hardwired up atm, I'll have to check. Once I fix this, this car is going back on the market, I'm getting sick of all of these little problems, it gets old, fast.

i have a 1jz, and im using the alt from my 2jzge motor, but like stick pointed out,the plug is different. ur 2jzge plug is a part of the body harness so it should still attached to the car unless it got cut off. matter of fact, the same thing happen to me a few weeks back where my 1jz alt died on me, thanks to AAA, i towed it to the shop, and changed it

this is the reason why i kept my 2J alt. as well...

1) it worked before i pulled the enigine so it's a known good part. The ones off a 1J can be hit or miss, plus all the time sitting around it may have crapped out

2) makes for easy replacement in case the 2J alt. fails. no need to search around for another used 1J alt. that could fail at any moment.

I bought the car with the 1jz swap, and so did the PO lol, my car is like a 6-7 owner. So I'll be searching for an alternator, is there a certain amperage it needs to be? will an 80 amp sc300 one work? I should have guessed it was dieing when my headlights would dim badly when the car was idling or out of gear lol.

I wouldnt give up on the car over an alternator. Sure **** breaks, but you're driving an 18 yr old car with a single turbo engine.

Oh if only it were just the alternator.. it's always something, I'm about to start college and I can't have a car that only works when it feels like it, gets old, fast.
I went on ebay and got a 93 sc300 alternator for 60$, 100amp, I read that I need an early SC alternator to match my car, as it's a 92.

trust and believe when i say, we all going thru it man, like Matador said, these cars are not new despite how they look. The A/C line that runs in front of the car under the radiator was leaking, and i thought it was an easy fix, but it seems a lot of SCs have the same issue with that line getting corroded and leaking. right now im so good at taking that line off, and putting it back in from trying about 4 different lines from various SCs at the junkyard, dealer wanted $600 for the line. but with persistence, i got it fixed, but im sure other problems will show up
