i am getting a reading out for the obd1 code
71 and i was trying to see what the problem was
i have no idea what this egr is there anyone that can fill me in maybe
have an idea of what to do to fix it

also the the check engine light
comes and goes so idk what that means if anything

There are any number of issues you need to check for this code:
Open or short in sub-throttle position sensor
Open or short in No. 1 knock sensor circuit
Open or short in No. 2 knock sensor circuit
Open in EGR gas temp sensor circuit
short in VSV circuit for EGR
EGR hose disconnected or valve stuck
Clogged EGR gas passage
ECU malfunction
