I have a 93 SC400 and the leather seats are showing signs of wear.

Could I get new seats (just the front seats) from Lexus and just install them? Do you think that would be way too expensive? Would they fit? I know they changed the seats since my year and they are MUCH nicer...

Has anyone thought of having their seats redone? Do you like it?

Thanks!

Kind regards,

Jeff Whitman

how bad is the wear? Someone else on this forum had his seats professionally cleaned and they look excellent!

Seats from the dealership, I believe would run you about 6k. Expensive.

My seats are starting to show bad wear, some of the leather is gone in small 'gashes' and the stitching is going bad. I'm probably going to get my seats re-leathered. Most definitely with how the 2000 SC400's seats looked like and the same type of stitching found on my SC. I've heard that the front seats should run from 800 to 1,200.

I want my seats out and some SC430 seats in. I love those L emblems in the rear of the front seats. They look so comfortable. If sumone wants to trade, lemme know. hehe

Default leather seats...bad shape

Yeah, they are in pretty bad shape. Some cuts, armrest is discolored because I tried to clean it a few years ago..ouch!

I would have the armrests on the doors, the armrest between the seats, and the seats redone. Also, I would probably have the doors redone to match. The back seat can stay the way it is...

Any idea who/what type of company I should call? I want it done nice and I want it to look great!

Thanks!

Couple weeks ago someone posted a wrecked SC430 with perfect seats. Might be worth looking in archives. Was in a junkyard.

Cool Check with dealer for leather cover only

You may want to check with the dealer to see if only the leather seat cover can be ordered. I just had my local dealership replace the rear seat on my 2.5 month old 2001 GS430 under warranty as there was a imperfection on the black leather. I thought they would order a complete seat but what they ordered was only the leather covering the seat and not the whole seat itself. Ordering the leather covering will certainly be less expensive than to order a complete seat. Don't know the price because the work was under warranty.

Exclamation leather seats

Here's the deal: It will be VERY VERY expensive to go to the dealer and get a whole new leather upholstery. In fact, Lexus doesn't change the upholstery, they take it to another company that does it. Sooooo, your BEST bet is to call your local dealer, and ASK them who they call to get their upholstery done. I assure you it will be 50% cheaper.

I called one time to get my driver and passenger seats re-upholstered (put brand new nice smelling leather in) and the service guy just told me to call the company that does it for them directly and get a PRICE QUOTE. AND sure enough, it was 50%+ cheaper.

Default Buy aftermarket!

WHY would you want to pay 6 thousand bucks for the leather on the stock SC and have the leather do the SAME thing in about a year or two?

Think about it. Mass produced leather (especially in the earlier models)..is MASS produced and has less durability. Even lexus conceded that. As long as the leather lasted for the first 2 years...they were fine w/it.

IF you are going to replacing it, go aftermarket.
I got premium Connolly Leather and put them over my lexus seats.
You can get similar pricing for about 1500-200 bucks..
MUCH better than 6 grand.
AND if you up for synthetic leather(which is actually softer and lasts longer)..you are talking 700 bucks and will TOTALLY feel better and look better than the leather you have now.

Don't pay through the nose for less quality.

Research aftermarket stuff.

Default Covers

A company on line actually sells leather seat replacements for the SC series. The link was on the Ladman site. Damn what was it. But they sold identical replacement leather for 1200.oo for the front pair. All you do is remove the seat (5 minutes), take off the old leather and replace with new leather (1.5 hours). If I can get the link I will post it. The quality is very good as I have seen someone replace theirs.

I got new custom two-tone (Taupe and Ivory) covers for the front and rear seats, armrest, and center console for my 92 and I love em. Made the car feel new again and it cost me under $1000. Installation takes a FULL day and a set of hog ring pliers.

Email me at Sales@TurboImports.com if you are interested.

Thumbs up

If the structure of the leather is in ok shape, check out www.leatherrenew.com I just ordered a kit from them which strips the top coat of finish off the leather, re-dyes it and re-finishes it. I have not tried it on my car yet but tested it on my office chair (both are black) and the result is amazing. That shiny, crinkled dirty look goes away and the leather has a soft matte finish like it is brand new. The ugly deep cracks the chair had are gone. I guess the top finish is what gives the leather that appearance. You can get a semi-gloss finish but I don't think that would be right for a Lexus, Maybe an old Cadillac but Lexus' should have a matte look with just a little shine maybe from conditioning.

I will keep you guys posted on how it turns out.

for about the same price you can pay for new leather you can get a set of sparco racing seats. I used to have a set of sparco torino's in my Grand Prix GTP. They are extremely confortable and supportive. But I don't think they come in leather. Just another possibility.

I would like to know what companies do in fact sell replacement leather for the SC400. Do these companies also sell replacement leather for the dash, doors, or rear seat? Thanks

Default Leather seat resoration or replacement

I was going to post in the cloth seats thread, but thought my post fit better here, even if the thread is OLD!!!!

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=287172

Regarding cloth seats.

HAHA I agree also.

And although pleather might look bad on a coat, but you can't knock the wear and tear it survives on seats. This must be something most SC restorers go through. What are the options really, since finding mint replacement front seats from a 10+ year-old car is tough?

- Stick with cracked, ripped, just plain ugly worn leather

- Get a leather restore polish kit (if they are not ripped and have hope left). If you have mint seats - TAKE CARE OF THEM!

- Get a leather reapolster kit i.e leatherseats.com or some similar service. Unless O.L.T has a line on a pleather reapolster kit BTW how do the leatherseats.com replacements hold up vs original factory leather?

- Get seat covers

- Go with cloth replacement seats

- Get racing seats (cloth or leather)

- Find leather seats from another car and mod them into your SC

We should poll this for anyone who has done something about worn, cracked, and/or ripped leather. Am I missing any other option, or existing thread where this has been more specially discussed?

Notice how nobody was all "use the search function, newbie" on her repeat ?'s (LeXuSrAcIn does give a friendly reminder later). All good, nobody said we were all created equal! Nothing like a QT standing next to HER OWN sc! It's a beautiful thing.

Looks to me like leatherseats.com is the common choice here, but there are always options.
