I have an idea to fix the problems with 97+ taillight conversion
Alright so after some research i came to the conclusion that adding resistors and taping them onto the trunk wall was the best remedy. Unfortently resistors are kinda expensive. So then i thought that cutting up my old wiring harness and connecting the 3 missing bulbs onto the 97+ harness was the most practical idea. I even got some heat resistant material to wrap the bulbs in. But i feel bad about wasting 2 good bulbs in the trunk when they could be used in the tail light.
So after doing some research online. I found out that a 7443 bulb will function in a 7440 socket. Now according to sylvania our break lights are 7443 and our turn signals are 7440. But on the actual taillight both are 7440. Now here is the interesting part. If you look inside the actual socket; they both have 2 sets of connectors, leading me to believe that if you put a 7443 bulb in, both filaments will light up.
Have anyone tried putting a 7443 bulb into the 97+ tails? Either the bulb will be a direct fit or you could always modify the bulb or socket to fit or you could just replace the socket with a "true" 3 wire 7443 socket.
If it works the brake light check light will be gone and the brakes will be 2x as bright. And you'll only need 1 turn signel resistor or bulb spliced onto the cable. Not to mention the turn signal will be 2x as bright as well.

So i tried putting the 4773 bulbs in today. If you just bend the pins in the opposite directions that they are stocl; the bulb will fit into the socket and both filaments will light up.
Unfortunately the rear check light still turns on. From inspecting the bulb, it looks like the second filament isnt as large as the first filament. Thus the resistance is still too low.

Why don't you just mod the flasher and lamp out units so they work with less bulbs or get the 97+ units and swap them in?
I just bypassed the brake/tail unit and modded the flasher unit to fix my issues. No extra bulbs or anything.
Matt.

BTW what do you mean about bypassing the brake unit?
