Default I finally found my SC! is it a good buy?

I was looking really hard for a white 5 speed 6 cylander SC and i finally found it. I never owned a SC or a Lexus but from reading the forums it seems like the SCs run strong with high miles.

this is the info the woman gave me on the car:

1996 Lexus SC300

Pearl white with tan leather interior, manual 5-speed transmission, sunroof, power seats with memory, heated front seats, remote CD changer

VIN: JT8CD32Z

Mileage (8/25/2008): 116,248

Oil change 14Mar2008

Starter and battery terminals replaced 14Sep06 (110611 mi.)

Battery replaced 26Jul06

110000 mi service 12Jun06 (110007 mi.)

Drive belt replaced, 105000 mi service, 29Nov05 (105730 mi.)

Clutch rebuilt 22Feb05 (99884 mi.)

Oxygen sensor replaced, 4 wheel alignment 31Dec04 (99122 mi.)

99000 mi service 23Dec04 (98974 mi.)

Clutch rebuilt, 95000 mi service 12May04 (95840 mi.)

2 Goodyear Eagle LS Tires 05Dec03 (90953 mi.)

2 Goodyear Eagle LS Tires 12Apr03

90000 mi service 29Nov03 (90755 mi.)

85000 mi service 06Jun03 (85519 mi.)

80000 mi service 24Oct02 (80176 mi.)

seems like a good deal so I'm making a 2 hour drive to see it. Do you guys have an opinions on it? It was listed near 7000

It sounds and looks great. Just try to check if all the componets work. Things to keep an eye out for is the LCA bushings, A/C compressor, timing belt, ect. These are just general maintenance. Otherwise you are most likely looking at a great deal.

Hmmm...from the angle of the second pic it looks like there was some repaint...door is different shade than the rear quarters...make sure to check that out and verify the carfax but carfax is NOT 100% reliable.

Why was the clutch rebuilt twice within 1 year? Thats odd.

Drive belt and timing belt are 2 totally different things and very different costs to replace make sure u verify it was in fact the timing belt with a receipt.

Also verify the HVAC display is operating and needles on dash are operational.

Price is ok but not a steal everyone is gonna say offer lower but based on the work performed and answers to the above that will tell u if good price. If that was painted and Im pretty good at detecting especially on Pearl as I have same color and none of major work been completed then I'd say 7k is high.

Good Luck...Where is car located?

$7K ? You can get 97+ MTs for that price.

Maybe lower the price for $5500?

she said this about the clutch being services twice:

Because they didn't replace a throw-out bearing the first time.
It started making noise soon after the first job, so I took it
back and they replaced the rest of the parts that had not been
done the first time, under warranty. It has been performing fine
since then.

By the way can anybody do a carfax for me?

I'd say it's a decent find. It's not overpriced, but it's not "cheap/deals" either. Only bad thing about a '96 is if you plan on doing a swap you're OBDII which kinda sucks, but it looks like a really nice car.

Ok sounds logical i guess on the clutch.

Dont trust Carfax for accident history/repairs its not always accurate verify paintwork when you do visual or ask owner...FWIW

Well verify the other service work performed (timing belt, control arms etc)thats been done and if any paintwork and extent of damage but I think price is still a bit high. In the end thats your call what you feel comfortable with spending. After you do a visual then you'll have a better handle on fairness of the price.

Also check the vin tags on all the body panels to make sure they are original...I think they still had those in '96.

It's really hard to tell you if it's a good deal or not. the only way to tell is to go and inspect the condition of it yourself.... look closely at the body and pay attention to everything when you drive the car.

I used to buy cars from a salvage yard so i have clue on what to look for, just not for this specific car. Its been on sale for over a month on some farm in the middle of no where. im pretty sure im not going to pay more then 6500, especially if needs a timing belt water pump really soon.
