Default Tire Series Size

I've noticed that some people run a 40 series in the front and a 35 series in the rear. Does that mean the back tire is thinner than the front.

And when I do see it. It's on staggered wheels. I was going to run the 225/40/18 up front and 245/40/18 rear.

I just don't get why the series in the back would be smaller. Maybe rubbing purpose?

a 35 profile on a 275 or 285 is taller than a 225 or 235 with a 35 profile. to keep the same overall diameter, you would go with a smaller profile in the rear.

That 40 or 35 series number that you're talking about is actually the aspect ratio. Here's an explanation of the aspect ratio from howstuffworks.com

Aspect Ratio
This number tells you the height of the tire, from the bead to the top of the tread. This is described as a percentage of the tire width. The smaller the aspect ratio, the wider the tire in relation to its height.

High performance tires usually have a lower aspect ratio than other tires. This is because tires with a lower aspect ratio provide better lateral stability. When a car goes around a turn lateral forces are generated and the tire must resist these forces. Tires with a lower profile have shorter, stiffer sidewalls so they resist cornering forces better.

i think as long as your running a wider tire in the rear you wanna do the 40/35 combo.

i was thinking about offsets and making sure my front tire would clear so much that i actually didn't even think about when i bought my tires, so i have 245/40's up front and 275/40's in rear and i really wish i would have got 35's in the back, i'll definetly do it next time i need tires.
