Default Fold-out Cup Holder

I recently purchased a foldout cup holder for my 1994 SC300. I am embarrassed to say that I cannot figure out how to install it. There seems to be a blank plate at the back of the intended slot. Has anyone installed one of these and if so, can you share how you did it?

You need to remove the center console trim piece (tan/brown piece surrounding the stereo, climate control, etc.). When you remove it, on the back side of that "blank plate" you see there are clips. The clips you squeeze in, and it will let the blank piece slide out. When you put the cup holder in, you'll notice it has the same clips so that it can clip into the slot where your "blank plate" came out of. To remove the trim you need undo all the bolts. There is one under the center cup holder (just pull this thing straight out, might take some muscle), I think there are 2 more on the inside of the ashtray and 2 more under the shifter bezel. that should be it to allow you to pry out the trim carefully and install it.

well there are two ways of fitting it, the right way and the quick wrong way, the wrong way is to screw a self tapping screw into the back plate and (wrench) pull it out, the correct longer way is to remove the centre consul, remove the back plate correctly, push the cup holder into the hole this clips into the back of the hole, replace centre consul, this way the back plate can be replaced if you decide to transfer the cup holder to another vehicle, i bought one and fitted it correctly and it is used frequently.

The wrong way sounds quicker, but won't the 'brute force' method damage the 4 slots?

DONE!! - was easier than I thought to remove the trim. Thanks again.

I will post pics of my '94 SC300 as soon as I can figure out how to get the files smaller than 100KB.

you don't need to remove the entire center console, just the trim piece that contains the slot for it....even this piece you don't need to remove 100%, you should be able to loosen it and pry it up enough to pull it out from the top half enough so that you can see the clips, etc...at least thats how I did mine.

My advice is to not trust the fold-out cup holder at all...

Well if you burn yerself w/ McDonald's coffee maybe you can sue them for a few billions.

that fold out cup holder is a joke. anything you put in it other than a can of soda (mind you, it has to be half empty) will just fall out. you would think they would make some way to lock the 2 halves once they unfolded....

perhaps our (uk) containers for drinks are different to yours but other than tall bottles ie coke etc ,i get no problems what so ever, also never had any problems with the opening "wings" collapsing or allowing the container to tip,but then perhaps we have smaller/shorter coffee cartons over here to yours.

Yeah I use that worthless thing to hold my GPS on long car trips.... But mind you it falls out unless my wife uses one of her hair rubberband things to hold it in.

Worthless...
