I strongly suggest forking over the cash for the exact product that was used in that thread: VANS Tail Spray (~$25). VANS comes out glossy, whereas other sprays come out flat and require a top coat of gloss clear to make the tails not look fabricated.
I used VHT Nightshades (~$10) with Clear Laquer (~$5) to smoke my Red/Clear 96 tails. It came out superb, but not without trial and error practice. It was an extremely difficult paint job to pull off right.
When you consider what I spent for the VHT product and the Clear, the VANS would have been close in overall cost, but the ease of use would have been night and day.
