Hey guys, relatively new SC owner and first time purchasing aftermarket wheels. Looking to hear any advice you all may have. I'm planning on doing the LS400 big brake swap soon and need to replace the OEM 16" five spoke wheels. I'm thinking about getting a set of Gram Lights 57DR 18x9.5 +38 wheels, with RE970AS or RE71R 265/35/18 and 245/40/18 tires on the back and front respectively. I plan on lowering the car 0.5"-1.0" once I get coilovers, stock-like camber. I do not want to roll the fenders if at all possible. Given all that, I have a few questions:
- Will the +38 57DR wheels clear the LS calipers? I did a quick search here and on Google and was only able to come up with a setup that used +22 57DR with rolled fenders. In the future I may get and additional set of TE37SL 18x9.5 +40 (or similar) wheels. Any info on whether those wheels will clear the LS calipers?
- Will the above setup result in any fender rubbing? If not would it be possible to put 275/35/18 tires on the rear and still not have any rubbing? I will be on the stock suspension for some time while I put together the money for a set of MCA Red coilovers so input on fender rubbing with stock suspension and coilovers would be greatly appreciated.
- How much tire stretch will there be on the front tires? I've seen a few setups with 245s on 9.5" wheels that show a bit of stretch. If I understand correctly, there is a difference between the stated "rim width" (the listed 9.5") and the "lip width" (unlisted total width of the wheel?) which seems to determine how stretched the tire appears. I want little to no stretch on my setup and am willing to put 18x8.5 +38 wheels on the front to mitigate excessive stretch.
The setup you want to run would work with no issues with modified fenders, but I'm not sure about OEM fenders. I never had aftermarket rims with my stock fenders, so I can't answer your questions.
The stretch is very dependent on the brand of tire you choose. When I was running 245/40/18 Michelin PS2 and Michelin Super Sport on my front wheels it had little to no stretch, but after going through 2 pairs I switched to a cheaper 245/40/18 Hankook v12 and the stretch is noticeable in comparison. I think you'll be fine with the bridgestones. I haven't used those specific tires before, but I've had Bridgestone RE11 and those ran wide.
The stated rim width is the measurement from bead to bead, so it's the width of the tire contact area. The "lip width" as you refer to it is usually about 1" larger (.5" for each flange).

It's been a while since I've handled a set of 57DR, but if I remember correctly they clear the brembo brakes on a STI, so it should be fine for the LS calipers. I would recommend contacting the vendor you plan on purchasing from for the most accurate answer.

I saw my friend's 2017 WRX which happened to have almost the same setup with Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tires that had just the amount of stretch I was looking for on the front tires. Was going to try the WRX wheel/tire combo on the SC but the wheels were +55 so it wasn't going to be of much help in testing the fit of +38 wheels.
For the rears I'll probably do the planned 18x9.5 +38 with 265/35/18 since it was mentioned in post #3163 as one of the popular combinations for no fender modifications (albeit with +35 offset).

I believe on my old SC300, I ran a 9.5" +38 wheel on the rear with 255 tires and needed a minor trimming of the rear fender lip. Though, if you are only lowering your car 0.5-1.0" I don't know if you really have to worry much about this. I also believe there is some adjustment to camber that can be made so it may also have to do with your alignment settings.
