1998 SC300 Help needed
In the market for another. Looking for your help.
150K miles. Original owner. Pearl white, with spoiler. All maint done at dealer, has all records. No bolster wear to speak of, and tires at 60% all around. No accidents. Owner is about 65 years old, bought a new LS460. Timing belt changed at 135K (last time).
Asking price 9500, but seems like not getting many buyers with such high miles.
What to look for in such a high mile SC? Worth buying? What you think is reasonable price?

I picked up my SC400 which was very clean, no body dents or dings, no tears or rips in the interior, but high mileage @ 182,000 miles for $3,700. If I found a 98 @ 150k miles for 9500, I'd try to haggle it down to 8k since it is a newer and a more rare model year, assuming it's in decent condition.

Mileage doesn't bug me on those motors, as long as there are records for maintenance on the car and it appears to be in good running condition, no strange leaks here n there, I wouldn't be worried too much. Another plus is that an old man drove it, so chances are that it wasn't abused. Just look over the car and see if it's worth haggling over for you.

everything is good on that car. Just the mileage is high. When considering buying a used car, mileage doesnt mean everything, but it's a good indicator. Another thing u want to look for in buying a used car is age. An 8 year old car will start to show signs of wear, seals and things are starting to crack and anything like that.
Also is the car highwaydriven?
sounds like a good deal. Remember this is a lexus that cost 50+ grand back in the day. You take the ratio of $9,500/$50,000 and compare it to how much life it has left. Lets say you get about 50,000 more miles out of it. 50,000miles/200,000miles.
Roughly paying 1/5th of the car for 1/4th of its life.

The power steering pump leak seems to be an issue for all model years of the SC, so definitely set aside some cash for normal wear maint such as the ps pump, hoses, etc. As for the engine, I think if it was taken care of, I think it can easily go to 250,000 without much additional maint outside the oil changes and occasional valve/pan seals. Make sure the diff and tranny are also up to good operating order. I'd definitely drain and replace the gear oil in the diff and the tranny oil first thing if I were to pick it up.

OLT--Been good man!! How are you?
UPDATE: Just went and checked out the car. Car garaged all its life, not a dent/ding anywhere. No curbage on the wheels. Not a single oil leak anywhere.
I am surprised that the car had the timing belt done at 135K and not earlier. All instruments lighting work. All leather immac condition. Car is immac.
PROBLEMS: Brakes. You have to press the brake pedal down quite a bit, before it takes effect. However, there is no squeek. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK??
Transmission is smooth, everything works. Original owner (about 65 years old). Very pleasant guy.
Looking for your further help. Is it the pads (if so how much), or what else could it be? Master cylinder?
Will call the dealer tomorrow (where car was serviced for 8 years), and get the paperwork on last brake service.
