Default Changing locks / rekeying the cylinders?

Some time ago, I had my car broken into through the rear quarter glass. I was working on my car that day and I had stupidly left some ratcheting spanner wrenches in a box in plain view in the backseat. They broke the rear quarter glass and took the box...unfortunately, I had a small pouch in the box that had a spare lexus key inside.

I want to change all of my locks/cylinders, but I know that it would be extremely expensive. Is it possible for a skilled locksmith to change the keying of the tumblers and create a new key?

My other worry is that if I ever do sell the car, or if I need to get new keys cut, I could not simply use my VIN.

Anyone find themselves in a similar predicament? What did you do?

high security key cyls can't be re-keyed. That is part of the high security part. You're right, this will cost you A BRICK. sorry to hear.

D'oh I didn't think so either.

Perhaps I can get gazi can pull them out from one of the scrapped SC's. Still going to be expensive, and the steering column cylinder will be a major PITA.

I tried to have a locksmith work on my trunk lock cylinder because it was corroded solid when I got my car, but nobody could get it to work or rekey it. I can still get into the trunk using the interior release, so its not a big deal in my case.

Have you considered looking for a salvaged wreck that you can scavenge all of the locks from? It still wouldn't be cheap, but it would get you 4 matching cylinders and keys.

Good luck. That would creep me out knowing some thief out there has a key to my car.

I dont think it was a crackhead...rather some other group that's prevalent in the particular area.

I want to, but at the same time dont want to catch them in the act of trying to steal the car. It would probably get real messy, and 'somebody' would be going to jail, or the coroners.

How much did it run you, and did you get all new locks and ignition key cylinder?

I have the keyless entry system, key's, master FOB, all locks, and actually the entire steering column sitting here, but it isn't for sale quite yet. I'm hoping I can get the keyless to work on one of my other SC4's, which will require me to swap all the locks since the FOB is on the master. If it doesn't work out, it'll be in the classifieds eventually. Good luck on your search.
