The step that Looks to be missing is adding a UV protectant at the end. Simplest way I've found to get the outside looking new again is to start with the light still in the car... Wet sand with 400 (sounds aggressive I know) then 800 followed by 1500 and the 2000... Next I use a DA polisher with a medium cut pad and a light cut compound followed by a swirl remover and then apply the uv sealer. Total process of hazy light to new looking is about 20 min each- then a few hours for the uv sealer to cure.
