I'm new to this forum and new to the Lexus world. I currently own a '99 V6 Camry and have had no problems with it at all (knock on wood). My question is about a '92 SC400 that I am somewhat interested in buying. The car appears to be in decent body condition, but the engine "smokes" (from what the dealer describes). I was wondering if I should avoid this car or if the problems are most likely minimal. Opinions? Thanks.

Sorry. the car is actually a '93. I'm sure about the number of miles, but it's probably over the 100k range. Could the problem be due to a clogged a radiator? That problem and the power steering pump seem to be two common problems.

smoking
If it's a bluish smoke upon a cold start this happens when oil seeps into a cylinder and is burned along with the gas. This would be due to a bad seal or even a piston ring. It's worst when it's continuous, warm or cold. But not as bad on cold starts. I'd get an estimate on a repair. Include that in the cost of the vehicle if you're that interested in it.

Well, I haven't gone to see this car yet. It's out of town, and I haven't gotten a chance to make the trip yet. I just saw a description which said, "engine smokes." I plan on doing all the repairs myself if I get it, I'm just curious if this car may have a typical problem and if so whether or not that problem is a major one.
