Give it a few minutes to cool down since there is still heat in the core, letting the car sit a while is a good idea too just to be sure.
I love you, you just solved my driving my self crazy for two months trying to figure out why my AC wasn't cold enough (seems the heater core was heat soaking the evaporator I guess because it's older can't keep up with good old 100* weather in LA).

A/C is ice cold now!

I would suggest replacing the valve for the heater in the radiator water line as it would seem to corrode up with age and not close properly, also some thermo tape on the exhaust , and the heat mat that is readily available form most car acc shops, put the heat mat on firewall inside and out.

net4n6, thanks for bumping this old thread. I've been trying to solve the same hot vent air problem as some of the people here and couldn't get much input on how far the heater control valve is supposed to rotate. OLT's suggestion brought me full circle to suspecting it wasn't closing all the way.

When i experienced this problem i went out under the hood and manually closed off the heater core control valve and removed the arm so it couldn't re-open. Since then i have been heat free.

It seems the control valve never seems to fully close, especially if the air is off. Give it a shot, i have been very happy since i did.
