Default Please help newbie with CPO vs New

I am looking to get a RX350. There are 4 Lexus dealerships within 50+ miles. 2 of them are one group and 2 are another group.

I was originally looking at CPO 2013s. One had 34k miles with asking price of $37,000. Another dealer has one with 24k and another 14k for $40,000 and $41,000, respectively. The 24k had new front struts installed which I found strange. The other two had no reported issues on carfax or autocheck. Also each RX has the same package, comfort, nav, and premium.

Looking today at dealer #2, they got a few 2014 with about 10k miles for $46,000 and same packages.

Dealer #2 seems to have the best prices on CPO of all the dealers.

After reading more on here. It looks like I could almost get a new 2015 for around these prices. Especially if I add 5 year CPO/Extended. (There are a few 2013 at non-lexus dealers for mid to low $30,000s.

I would take the one with 2013 with 14K miles or 2014s if I could get under $38,000. I don't know how much room I have with CPO negotiations since I have never bought a used car before. I'm also thinking new if I can get down to $42,000.

My plan is to reach out to all 4 dealers today with my preferred vehicle (black ext, saddle or black interior, comfort, nav, prem) and see which one offers the best deal independent of the year. I plan to actual buy on Saturday, last day of month. I can't hold out really because I sold my car earlier this week.

Does this strategy seem okay or should I pick a certain year to narrow it down?

I prefer not to go over $38,000 to $40,000, but could if right deal. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Those prices seems rather steep. I bought my 2013 CPO with 14k miles with the same packages for $35,500. You can definitely negotiate on the asking prices. Check the carfax and see how long it's been in the dealer's possession to help you negotiate a better price. At those prices you might be better off going for a new one though.

Take CPO if 2013 with less than 30k miles under low $30,000, anything above 35k buy new.

Thanks I was thinking these prices were steep. They have a few cheaper ones but they don't have the same packages, most don't have comfort. New with the 3 is about packages 50000.

The ones at dealer #2 have been there since January and February of this year.

I contacted all 4 dealers via email. Each one quoted 2013 under 30,000 miles north of $40,000. One dealer want $42,000 for a '13 with 15k another wants same price for one with 8k. Dealer 2 is the only one to discuss a 2015 version and CPO. Hopefully they will drop by Saturday.

There is only 1 Lexus dealership within 50 mile radius of my house.
The next Lexus dealership is 100 miles away.
This closer dealership has two 2013 RX350 with less than 30K miles, and each is listed at $39500 (premium pkg but I don't see Nav).
So they charge sky-high prices because supply is low.
Of course, you can negotiate a lower purchase price but when supply is low, the sales guy is less willing to cut a deal with you.

Where are you located? I am in a similar situation in NC with two dealers in the Raleigh durham area and two in Greensboro-ws area. The ones in Raleigh area are not competitive at all in price. Greensboro folks were okay but ended up going out of state.

I am in Colorado. One dealer said he would go 4500 off MSRP and another said he would go below 48000 (comfort, premium, nav packages). The prices on the 2013 were dropped by 1000.

I have an offer for new 2015 Kia Sorento SX for 34,000 that I know I can get lower by 1or 2k with extended warranty (10 year bumper 2 bumper or 125k?). I am wondering whether I should mention it. (I don't mind the Kia but Mrs says get a Lexus due to monthly payment, and this car will be hers eventually).

Should I mention the kia offer?

My opinion - Offer him 10% under sticker and tell him/her that you think that's a fair price that gives the dealership the profit they are entitled to, the salesperson the sale, and you with a good feeling about the discount.

Telling the salesperson that you are thinking about a KIA tells him that you are serious about buying a car, and can probably be talked into a quality Lexus without too much talk.

Good luck. My rule of thumb is that if you can get a car out the door for sticker price, that's pretty good and amounts to about 10% off sticker.

BTW, when you go into the finance office to sign the papers, get ready for high pressure to buy extra stuff. DON'T! My opinion.

Thanks. Does the 10% rule apply to used cars?

Yes. We got about 9% off sticker for our 2011 CPO.

Thanks Ray.

So looking back over the 2013 I noticed one of them (the one I prefer) had its front shock absorbers replaced during the CPO inspection. It also has Michelin tires, not the Dunlop oem. I emailed asking about it.

While I prefer to get CPO, the local BMW shop has a few 2013 RX under 24k miles and under $38,000. They aren't my preferred ext. Color but both have the comfort, premium, navigation, tow packages, as well as audio package, one of them also has remote start.

If you are shopping for a new vehicle, check out Edmunds.com
I used their information to get the RX as close to the invoice price as possible.
The STi I bought recently was dead-on invoice.
