Question Rain sensing windshield to be replaced

My dealer says the windshield on my 2012 RX 350, which has < 8k miles, has to be replaced in order to fix the auto rain sensing function. Even though it is covered under warranty I'm confused and not happy with this. Does anyone know what is in the windshield that causes the problem? Could it just be the control sensor behind the rear view mirror, which they detached in their trouble-shooting?

ask your dealer for more clarification. Would seem to be two separate defects if they are replacing the sensor and the windshield.

mcdgary, what is the problem with the rain sensing wipers? Are they not coming on, infrequently, too frequently? How did the dealer come to conclusion the windshield has to be replaced? You mentioned they checked the sensor. How about the switch on the stalk on the right of the steering wheel? A little more information would help

Sensor is probably glued to the windshield. You should be glad they are going an extra mile and replacing the whole thing instead of ripping it off.

Not glued as that is where I have my radar hard wired to. But it is very flimsy and someone trying to put it back on could destroy it pretty quickly.

Smile Thanks to all above.

Summarizing:

Auto rain sensing wipers would not work. Lexus dealer declared problem as a warranty item and stated on his invoice:

"Found brackets for rain sensor permanently affixed to windshield not adhering, poor fit causing concern. Sublet to Glass company (Safelite) for windshield installation."

Took my 2012 RX 350 in at 7:30 am August 1 as scheduled by Lexus dealer, given a 2014 RX 350 "loaner" and was called at 2:20 pm reporting new windshield had been installed and I could pick up my vehicle. Well, it is a rainy day here so I got to immediately check it out. Works as it is supposed to.

New one is OEM, it has the Lexus etc. on the left front near bottom. Although, no cost to me I saw the invoice with the windshield at $1525 +- a few dollars and the gel sensor tape around $20.
