OK, so I bought a 2011 RX back in September with about 20,000 miles on it. I had the oil changed right away, so that I would know the condition of the oil. I was then told that I was now good for 10,000 miles... but they put a sticker on the windshield saying it was due in 5000. I asked the service guy which was it really?? 5k or 10k? He says 10k, and to not worry. Today I start the car and the display says "Oil Service needed soon"... and I'm at about 4900 miles! So what's the deal??? Did they not reset the reminder correctly? or do I need to go in and have them reset it for another 5k?

It should be a reminder issue. I've had the same issue when I purchased my IS350. But it's an easy fix, I would take it in an just ask them to change it. You can also play with the maintenance option and maybe reset it yourself.

yea i had the same, after i got my rx i did the oil change, then after 4900 miles or so, i had "oil change required soon", i went to the dealership, they said i dont need an oil change for another 5k miles, but this is just a sort of reminder, so they just did 21 point inspection, checked the car if it was all good and told me to come back after i drive another 5k miles. Reminder is gone and i checked oil levels its all good and its not burnt. So i guess thats normal

The Reminder message cannot be change to a 10,000 interval.
It will go off every 5,000 miles.
Service dept wants you in as frequent ss possible, it's called Business.

I do a lot with my cars/ SUVs ( oil change, spark plugs, belts, filters etc) but 95% of drivers DON'T.
So 5,000 mile is a good timing to check for leaks, fluid level ( washer fluid etc) and rotate those tires.

yep, you definitely want to rotate those tires every 5k miles..

The dealer hopes that when you stop by to ask they can find something expensive to repair or replace that is not under warranty.

Unless you know the dealer is using synthetic oil or you do your oil change yourself with synthetic oil, I'd say do the 5k change.

Older models only have the 5,000 mile setting......quit blaming the dealers.

Lexus switched to synthetic back in February 2010 and updated the maintenance manual to reflect the new oil and schedule. That included early models, I saw the notice sent to dealers. Lexus also did away with the 30 day/1K check, making the 6 month/5K the first service. And the 12 month/10K service with oil change was made complimentary. I wound up getting three free services on the 450h the first year, but only one oil change.

Parker, congrats on your RX. The good news is you can reset the oil service light yourself. It doesn't require a trip back to the dealer. Click here for instructions. It's from the FAQ thread on top of this forum. The light illuminates every 5K miles "as an important reminder to have the oil level checked and complete other routine services, such as the need to have your RX---'s tires rotated and brakes inspected. Regular inspection/service of these critical components, which do not wear at prescribed intervals, helps ensure your vehicle's safety." That was from the letter accompanying the revised maintenance manual I received back in February 2010. I just automatically schedule an appointment twice a year, and reset the light as needed.

This was meant to ALLLL those that see Lexus dealers as ONLY wanting your money and will do everything to get you in to steal your money vs dealers like mine that CARE about taking care of a fine product!!! It pops up in every thread, usually by someone that can't really afford a Lexus!!

As Anita has mentioned, this is a carryover from the old 5K schedule. They simply didn't update the counter. It is also only a USDM feature. I don't see it in the manual anymore, but for the Prius, it used to state that if 0W20 synthetic was not available, then 5W20 could be used, but needed to be changed after 5K miles.

Speaking of 5K schedule, other than tire rotation, is it really necessary bringing it to dealer? My dealer charges close to $300 for 15K service where they only inspect bunch of things + tire rotation. I think it is very steep.

so you obviously don't know the fact that not all dealers will stock 0w-20...

well, since 0-20 is what the factory wants in the engine, I think if your dealer doesn't want to stock that, then you should find a different dealer..
I expect my dealer to use factory specified products when I bring the car to them, otherwise, I can just take it elsewhere and give my money to someone who deserves the business..
