That's probably because people that are attuned to their tire needs will not pay extra for TPMS.

I own a lexus es 350. Paying the dealer to install tire pressure warning valves and transmitters when tires are replaced is way too much bs as far as I'm concerned. I'm 70 years old and have been checking tire pressure for the last 50+ years. Not hard. So why go to the expense and hassle. Is there a downside to not doing it?

TPMS gives you a realtime warning of a loss of tire pressure. Even if you checked your tires weekly you wouldn't know that you just ran over a nail a mile back on the freeway. Your TPMS could avoid an accident.

I've been checking my tires, mostly weekly, for over 50 years as well. I've found several punctures through the years and even still, I've had two tire blowouts on the freeway prior to TPMS and one puncture that I was alerted to by the TPMS. I prefer the realtime alert to the blowout.

Good point but don't blowouts usually happen at the time of the puncture rather than afterwards? If true, the sensors don't have time to sense the pressure loss before hand. Incidentally,any idea what it generally costs to have these valves and transmitters replaced by a dealer.

I don't think they all do. If you run over a nail, you will wind up with a slow leak. If you then get on the highway that tire heats up and you have a blowout, likely due to the heat and flexing causing a failure of the sidewall.

My two blowouts were both on the highway and were caused by a nail in one case and a screw in the other. I don't believe punctures these occurred on the highway, With my last tire issue, I had checked the tires a week prior and the TPMS alerted me to the issue about a half mile from the highway on-ramp.

They are available on ebay for around $100 a set of four. You may also find that a local tire shop can do this for you at less cost then a Lexus dealership.

The good news is that Westside Lexus in Houston made the low pressure symbol turn off. The suspect news is that they did it by filling the tires to 36 psi which is substantially more that the book recommends and which provides no range for a soft or firm ride. They justified this amount of pressure by saying that it is appropriate for Houston. Houston, which is hot and humid in summer! What do you think?

I think I'd have a sit down with the service manager and the owner. Failing satisfaction I'd find another dealership or request assistance from Lexus Corporate.

I just programmed my 2nd set of wheel/tire package (Summer use) TPMS sensors with the Ateq QuickSet Tool, great device, I have both sets (Winter& Summer) programmed into the Ateq QuickSet and merely have to
plug the Ateq into the OBD11 port and press "Winter" or "Summer" and that's it, no visit to any Lexus dealers or Tire Shops.
My summer setup is a set of Lexus specific TSW Lumarai wheels in 20x8.5 - 37mm offset with Hankook AH R07's 265/45/20", winter setup is the OE 19x7.5" Lexus Wheel/Michelin's 235/55/19's

I also got the VT30 to read the codes (also a cool way to check tire pressure without getting dirty). If anyone in the Toronto area needs their TPMS codes read or triggered I can do it but since the quickset only allows 4 cars I can't program the ECU.
