Installing a Curt Hitch on a 2012 450h
Just finished an install of a Curt hitch on a 2012 450h. This was a DIY job, here are some thoughts and notes.
It took me 2 - 3 hours between getting all the tools together, pulling the car apart, installing, cutting the fascia, putting everything back together, and cleaning up.
- There are some videos here in the forum on how to do the install, these are super helpful. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...ll-videos.html
- One suggestion in the video I recommend is to tape your fasteners to the instruction sheet for each step. There are at least 5 different kinds of fasteners holding the fascia on the car, and you can easily mix them up otherwise.
- You will need a torque wrench to properly attach the hitch to the vehicle. AutoZone and perhaps other auto parts stores have loaner tool programs where you can borrow one for free since most people will not own one.
- You will also need a 9-inch socket extender which fits the torque wrench. This is also an unusual tool.
- You will need to torque the bolts down to 85 ft-lbs. Lying upside down on your back, this is not easy and requires a good bit of upper body strength.
- As noted in the video, it's not necessary to unfasten the muffler. I recommend skipping that step and saving yourself some trouble.
- The hitch is HEAVY. Lifting the hitch into place is really best done with 2 people.
- Don't even attempt this install when the car is hot. You will be working in close proximity to the muffler and you will burn yourself.
- Go ahead and install a wiring ponytail at the same time you put on the hitch. This is threaded under the fascia and wouldn't be a lot of fun to do later.
