Adding Oil to Filter
I will be doing a DIY oil change after my 10,000 mile free oil change from my dealership.
For those that change your own oil, have you ever thought of adding some oil to the new element insert BEFORE reinstalling the canister straight up and back on the engine?
I'm not talking about the threaded area's or the O-rings, I mean actually adding fresh oil inside the canister so when the engine is started for the first time after adding fresh oil and a new filter, there will be fresh oil getting to the engine faster for less wear from a dry start.
I had another vehicle that I did this to were the filter went straight up and I felt it help a lot.
Anyone?

First I am not an expert, but I do have several miles (on me). When I was a young boy, most of the vehicles had similar type oil filters, canisters (not screw on). Oil and filters were changed every 1,000 miles and most people in the community would fill the canister with oil before it was replaced. I am not sure if it helped, but I can’t think of any reason it would hurt. Just change it on time and keep everything clean.
Another observation, if you change oil and filters as recommended and don’t rev the rpm to high, normally the engine will last longer than the rest of the vehicle. I remember when two guys almost came to blow, because one said he had over 100,000 mile on the car without rebuilding the engine. The other one said he was lying and it was not possible. My, how engine have improved in my lifetime.

I actually enjoy doing DIY with all our vehicles whether it's the Toyota or the Lexus.
I haven't come across any literature showing evidence that what you're proposing actually have any added benefit.
Maybe it does..or maybe it's placebo effect.

I don't believe with today's engines it's necessary to fill the canister, especially using a good synthetic. Although I have not changed the oil in the RX yet, I changed it many times in the RAV4 we previously had. Same engine and filter. The canister doesn't really hold that much oil compared to some big screw on filters. The oil pressure light in the RAV would only come on for a second after starting.

I do not think that it will help as there is enough 0W20 left on the engine parts to start the car up without it running dry. Did Mobile 1 have a add a long time ago showing two engines running with out any oil in it ? One had Mobile 1 in it before the oil was drained out and the other just 10w30. And courses the 10w30 lock up fast while the Mobile 1 just keep on going and going

I do NOT think it helps because the oil INSIDE the canister does NOT flow out of the canister. It is a filter so Oil must first flow in the canister then when there is no room inside the canister oil will flow out of the canister (overflow) but before oil reaches to the canister it must have traveled inside the engine already.
I love DIY and change oils on all of my cars (about 10+ so far) and I have not done this.
