How to check oil type 0W-20 or 5W-30? Dealer might give me wrong oil change

Default Oil change question

On my first oil change for my 2011, the dealer placed windshield sticker said 5-30W was used but the service paperwork said synthetic 0-20W. I returned to the shop the following weekend and asked the dealer to change the oil/filter at my expense as I was not convinced where the error occurred. The service writer and manager complained a bit but then changed the oil/filter without charge. The second time, the sticker and paperwork matched. I'm guessing this made them a little more careful.

I assume 5W-30 would not adversely affect any engine designed for 0W-20 unless you are in extreme cold weather conditions in the winter time based on the enclosed paper and others which discuss the actual specs for motor oils.

This is my first car that is requiring synthetic oil 0w20w. I was thinking of putting in 5w/30w since that is avail @Costco. But it looks like it's 0w/20w or risk voiding the warranty. Anyone know where the best deals are for buying 0w/20w?

Buy the Toyota brand at any toyota dealer/service center.
I believe it's $6.95/ quart which is quite close to the mobil 1 0W-20 ( $6.75 walmart price)
The downside is, you can't buy them in gallon sizes, unlike the mobil 1

And by the way, Mobil 1 is the manufacturer of these Toyota Synthetic oils.

First off the 5w-20 wont hurt the motor at all.

Second to void the warranty: somthing catostophic would have to have happened to the motor and then Lexus would have to show that it was your use of the of an oil that is in non compliance with thier specs caused the problem. This is impossible for them to do it if you only had the wrong oil once or twice. Not withstanding the fact that when the 2010's first came out they came equipped with this exact oil. Sort of an uphill battle that I guarantee they would not be willing to take to court. The 5 makes it a tad thicker in the winter is all.

My understanding is that they have decided to go to a longer change interval as long as you are using full synthetic 0-20.

In reality there are so few warranty claims to start with on motors and for Lexus to "void your Warranty" seems a little far fetched. Now if you never changed the oil and somthing happened then they would have a cause to look into it a little further. Having gone through this with GM a few years back they only wanted documentation the oil was changed.

The manual also says you can use 5W-20 but it should be changed to 0W-20 next oil change, it also says it might be better to use thicker oil for high speed or high load situations.

And to use Oil that has ILSAC certification

So no its not instant warranty voided, as long as you follow the above you are fine. Mostly any oil today has a ILSAC certification, certainly the oil used at lexus dealers have it.
