Default 40k service

My friend has a 2010 RX350 and he asked me if the 40k mile service is needed. We went through the list and besides changing oil, air filter and a/c filter replacements, and rotate tires i don't think its necessary. The total cost from the local dealer is 600 plus tax. Of course he will do the items stated above hes just not sure to go and pay for the 40k service or do it separate.

What do you guys think?

Simply amazing regarding that cost estimate. Based on work needed, I assume you could save a few hundred dollars easily by having the work done at a Toyota dealer or another reputable auto service center.

He should ask the dealer specifically what is included in the $600 (a breakdown of costs would even be better) and then compare that to what is in the recommended service portion of the cars service manual. Then decide if the additional items make sense for the RX given its use and condition. As a baseline my Lexus dealer charges $160 for the 10,000 mile service and I don't think that is any special deal. The filter replacements could add another $200 to that number, but there must still be other items in the $600. Obviously, the recommended items in the manual could be done very economically outside of the dealership.

Could they be including a diff fluid change in that estimate? I mean, $600 is ridiculous. Oil/Filter and rotation at my local shop for my old ES was only like $70. I just changed air and a/c filter myself which was simple enough to do in a few minutes.

That quote sounds closer to a major service (45K maybe?) than a minor service. Like UCSB said, get a breakdown from the dealer. Some of the items are not necessary.

The dealer breakdown usually includes their 'priceless' fluff package. I asked mine to figure the fluff out and just go with what the book said do. Came up same price, I went to the Toyota dealer and got excellent service for a fraction of the price. I was not able to secure a latte tho.

But for warranty work, definitely the Lexus dealer.

Unfortunately, most of the stuff that jack up any price are those " visual" inspections.
There's so many that for a regular joe, he's going to think that a lot of things are being done.
i agree with the rest, 600 is steep, unless they're doing a 45,000 service already.

Did your friend miss any of the scheduled maintenance? like the 30,000?
